Hey everyone I need some help. I have an '03 Marauder w 120k miles bone stock except a K&N intake and a superchips programmer. The other day I was driving down the road and when it went to go into 3rd gear it didn't catch and it just revved up so I pulled over. So I tried to go again and I took off fine, shifted into 2nd fine and then going into 3rd again it didn't catch and just revved up. Can someone please help me or have an idea as to what this is before I take it into a shop and spend a fortune just to get a diagnostic?!?!

Same happened to me when my trans blew up, stub shaft sheared itself to pieces and first would work, second would kinda work, but 3rd and the OD band would free-rev. It probably won't behave like it is for long, by the time we were trying to move it into position to have it pulled onto a flatbed to take to a shop, it started making terrible grinding.
I'm not saying it's a guarantee that your trans needs a rebuild, but it's very possible.

I had that happen, it was a chaffed wire in the wiring harness, the car did throw some codes when it happened.

do yourself a favor and go get it rebuilt or buy another one maybe a used one. Trust me it will save you alot of time and money. I had the same problem. I had sensors installed and tried a new computer. One of the gears in your transmission is gone.

I've had multiple mechanics say a transmission would cost anywhere from $3,000-4,200 and that is just too much $$$ for this car. Where's the best place to find a used transmission or even new? I'd prefer just fixing the problem rather than replacing the whole thing if I can.

$3,000 - $4,000 sounds a bit high from what I have read here?
I am sure some of the Chitown boys will chime in, but will say at 120k on the clock, a rebuild is in order.
Good luck!
Mike.

You need to find some new mechanics that don't have their hands in your pocket!
A performance rebuilt transmission would cost under $2K - so they want more than $1K to install?!

Good LORD! You could buy one from Ford cheaper!

In most cases, "fixing the problem" on a high mileage automatic transmission means "replacing the whole thing".
If you don't want to fix the car, there is a 16 year old kid out here in California who would love to buy it from you cheap!

The clutches in your tranny are worn out.
I paid $2700 for a high performance rebuild with all the bells and whistles, even the torque converter, cooler and forced lube mod. (See below) I bought the parts on ebay and paid a trans specialist $1200 to do all the work, including 14 quarts of synthetic fluid. Shop around.

What about checking the transmission fluid level, color and smell? Try the easy stuff first.

Transmission fluid checked out fine. I guess I would rather have it rebuilt by a mechanic I know for a cheaper price. Definitely do not want to replace it if I can have it rebuilt for less.

Replace and Rebuild mean the same thing in this context. The only way you'll get a new 4R75W is to buy a new truck.
