How much top end speed will I loose going from the factory 3.55 gear with stock wheels and tires to 4.10 or 4.30 gear?

Idk your answer but I never go above a steady speed of 80mph with my 4.10s. How often do u go 100mph, I'd take getting out the hole over top end.

I have run 135mph in 3rd gear @6500 rpm with 4.10 gears. This was done at Atlanta Speedway. Don't know what it would run in O/D, have never tried it. This was with stock size tires on rear.

111 just into OD with 4:30's. don't recall the RPMs.

I saw you hit 100mph on Saturday!

My reason for asking about top speed deals with 1/4 mile runs. I don't want speed to be my limiting factor this upcoming summer. Will 4.10 and 4.30 have a close mph?

4.30 gear will run 130 @ 6500. 4.10 gear will run 135 @ 6500. 5 mph difference @ 6500 in 3rd gear. This is all based on stock tire size.

You would want to run a 28" slick with 4.30's if you have a good power adder.

4.30's max speed in OD would be somewhere pretty close to being drag limited. BUT with all that extra driveshaft speed if you plan on 100+ other than 1/4 mile stuff I think you need to do a force lubrication mod in the tail shaft of the transmission and a better driveshaft.

I frequently cruise at 100-110 when I drive to Vegas with 4.10's. Haven't had any issues yet. Guess I'm lucky?

Btw, top speed and trap speed are 2 different things.

A sweet calculator can be had here Sweet Speed Calculator (http://vexer.com/automotive-tools/speed-rpm-calculator) Just change one of the gear options to 4.30 or whatever.

Stock trans ratios are 4R70W ratios are: (1st) 2.84, (2nd) 1.55, (3rd) 1.00, (OD) .7

4.30 in OD with a 28.2 tire at 6500 is 182 mph and in 3rd it would be 127 with a 100% torque converter efficiency(locked and not slipping).

ill do 120mph if I want to race someone or for shitsand giggles but it won't be at a steady speed for miles.

Not even close. You can run a 4.56 gear in a Marauder and still be within the powerband and under redline.

Also for what its worth, if my Marauder was a toy car it would have 4.30's minimum in it.

If I had a extra $250 for the 4.30 tune I'd be installing them next week

Gear swaps do not require a tune.

Uh I thought a "tune" is needed to optimize the performance of them

I thought you might need to adjust the speedometer after a gear change?

Adding steeper gears has a minor affect on the tune, if any at all. The shift points may need adjusting and the speedo setting has to be changed but those can be done with a hand held tuner or a mail order trans tune which is a lot cheaper than a full dyno tune.

That's what I meant by "tune" ...not a dyno tune. I wouldn't think about the dyno unless I was SC or had headers, heart, stall, intake etc as an NA car

You can have a new trans tune emailed for $75 or change it yourself with an xcal.

Most tuners that I would trust charge more than $75.00 for a tune.

Tune it yourself?? Good chance you'll grenade your motor.

BTW... you'll need to buy a tuner for both options... $300.00 - $450.00.

Please read all my posts in this thread. I was referring only to the "trans tune", more secifically changing the shift points and the gear ratio. Those can be changed with a hand held tuner or very inexpensively with an email tune from a reputeable, respected tuner. It's time to find a new tuner he charges $250 for a trans tune.

There are ways to compensate for the gears without a tune also, like with a speedcal. This may work: http://www.blueovalchips.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=26 or this http://www.americanmuscle.com/speed-calibrator-94-04.html here's another place that has them: http://www.dallasmustang.com/mustang-parts/product/SPEED-CAL-1994-2004-5-SPEED-EXTENDED-RANGE/7626

a handheld won't allow enough adjustment of a/f and timing to blow the engine

$75??? From who? That's cheapest I've ever heard and tune it myself. Naw I'll pass on blowing up my car.

I have my own xcal that came with the car preloaded with a Zach410 tune, only thing i change is the line pressure or tire size if i switch sizes. I leave the other stuff alone. Already have a tune = the only reason I'm going 4.10. If I had the money for a 4.30 tune I'd be placing a order with Marty and going 4.30

I believe the price was $250 for that tune. I just rather get the car fixed and add pep vs spend more on tune and don't have the car fixed that's all

email zach your tune file and have him inetgrate the trans tune file and you're done, simple as that. Changing the gear ratio with the handheld is safer and no different than adusting the line pressures.

What makes you think you'll blow up your car?

That's the one in the handheld (free). I asked about 430 & 456 he said he had no knowledge of them because he has never used them. So I left the convo at that

just change the gear ratio in the Xcal and be done with it.

If I go into global spark etc

I know the gear ratio line pressure and tire option won't do damage

I have 410s on the way now. And the place I ordered them from doesn't have a 430 only a 456 so I'm just going with 4.10 much as they suck to me but it leaves me room for a 75-100 shot of NO2

no need to change the spark advance after a gear change .
