View Full Version : Driveshaft Upgrade with 4.10's

A few years ago, there was a lot of discussion about whether it was necessary to upgrade your driveshaft if you were using 4.10's or risk damage to your transmission tailshaft, especially at sustained speeds over 100 mph (or even as low as 80, according to some) - long technical discussions about driveshaft harmonics, comparisons of aluminum, MMX, etc. Many SME's weighed in on this.
Well, a lot of people have gone to 4.10's, and I figure that most of them did NOT do this ; enough time has passed to ask :
Did lots of people with the 4.10's experience tailshaft damage ?
Is upgrading the driveshaft still considered mandatory with the 4.10's ?

I've not upgraded mine, have put on 60K+ since installing the 4.10s with no issues. IMO, not a problem unless you do sustained high speed driving.

I have over 75K on my 4.10's and still have the stock driveshaft. Just don't do any sustained (100+ mph) for a long time and you'll be fine.

Upgraded shaft is not required.

I upgraded mine to the late 99/early 2000 CVPI MMX driveshaft. I do a lot of highway (usually 70-80 mph) speeds, no vibration but my tailshaft seal is leaking again.

Interesting,
Although I have only had the 410's for about 6,000 miles, I never thing twice about cruising at my usual 80MPH. Sometimes bursting to 100+MPH.
Still may be too early for me to chime in, but no leaks, no vibration, nothing.
Gonna continue to rock it out.

Another great thread here...I have wondered about this same thing as I plan to change to 4:10 sometime in the near future.
I did get the res delete tips yesterday from Rich...YEA
cannot wait to get them on

Guess its a good thing I don't have 4:10's! :D
Have had my car up to 160MPH with my stock 3:55 gears! NO ISSUES!

Interesting,
Although I have only had the 410's for about 6,000 miles, I have a DTR, so achieving 80MPH is extremely difficult for me, however, sometimes I'll hit that going downhill.
So although it doesn't really relate to me, I'll chime in anyway, I have no leaks, no vibration, nothing. I guess you could say I'm all slow and no go...
Gonna continue to rock it out...

I road trip my MM a lot and have tons of open road around here. I set my cruise anywhere from 90-110mph frequently with my 4.10's. No problems, no leaks, no vibrations. Sometimes I'll even do a few sprints up to 125-130 when I get bored.
Btw, don't ever go above about 110 with your sunroof open.

The break in the roof line does something with pressures and it actually starts to "bounce/pulse" I thought I had blew a tire it shook the car so bad.

We are talking about repeated sustained high speeds, you don't drive it enough.

4.30's, track use, no driveshaft, no problems.

You of all people should know that my car is repeatedly sustained at high speeds (triple digits) damn near every time I drive it! :P
You know Rt.50 is my autobahn! :burnout:
The 160mph was just an example.
Hell you should see me driving through the mountains going to and from Louisville! :drive: :burn:

Could this be why if I back my car up my driveway which has a uphill grade to it under load I hear a "clunk" underneath towards back of driveshaft and rear end!?

This was batted around exhaustively a few years ago, to the point where I wasn't sure it was a good idea to even bring it up, but I'm glad I did.
If you have the money to spend, I'm sure that the custom driveshafts are sweet. Considering how many of the heavy-hitters on this site are saying that they have been running 4.10's or better with no issues for many miles, some even s/c'd, on OEM driveshafts, I'm about to call :bs: on this upgrade being absolutely necessary.

I had to replace my tailshaft seal. I don't know if it was due to excessive spirited high speed runs but it did spook me enough to not go over 100 as often. Probably for the best with the way Fla has been stepping up enforcement around Orlando.

Upgraded my drive shaft, still with 3:55's, it's not like it's a whole lot of money, and, it's cheaper than the repair that can result from not changing it.

Why not just have the OEM drive shaft rebalanced for high speeds?
Somebody please enlighten me.

Ford engineers limited top speed in crown victoria cop cars due to driveshaft harmonics. This is fact not speculation. Carry on...

You sure? I thought it was because its a 4400lb car with 800lbs of wiring/equipment, and only 260hp that limited them pretty nicely.

Yes, it is a long shaft and U-joints impose slight vibration. The concern is valid.
As many have pointed out, you can get away with some amount of high (driveshaft) speed. We hotrodders often get away with more than the factory intended.
But if you're a speeder the upgraded driveshaft, and even 3.55 gears should be considered.
