been poking around in the forums but there doesnt seen to be any set thread for it but is there any known issues with that motor?
my recently purchased MM has a little over 32k miles and wasnt really driven hard as far as i can tell. but its got what i can only describe as a knock thats hard to notice over the exhaust unless i pull up to something like a drive through and can hear the motors sound bouncing off the wall as i go up to the window.. i want to say it what i would almost call a rod knocking or lifter popping. are these motors noisey?? lifter clatter??
thoughts? comments?
Thanks in advance.

The motors are generally very quiet, especially at low mileage.

I dont know for sure but im pretty close to positive that because there are 4 valves per cylinder youre going to hear them slapping around at least a little. Being in that type of area youre in where I would listen for exhaust leaks because you hear every noise. As far as im aware you will have some valve tap as normal and I always heard it in mine. I had two marauders and both have the same low level but steady tap. Im sure you could adjust it somehow to make that not be as loud but I dont know how it is done without causimg too much valve overlap or valves that dont seal. Hope this helps.

When you get echoes off walls, tunnels, drive thrus etc. almost any engine sounds funky. I wouldn't worry about.

You may need an oil change.
If you live in a hotter area you could use 5W30, but if the temperature gets near or below 32 F and you park outside, then stay with 5W20. Many Marauder owners use Mobil 1 or Royal Purple top quality oils.

Phoebe has had what could be considered a "rod knock" type of sound off and on since we bought her, and that was 80,000 miles ago (she has over 160,000 now). I gave up worrying a long time ago.

I have had my DRT '04 for two years last October and with only 23,000 miles, the motor run very quietly...
For some insurance I guess though...because of the complex mechanical valvetrain and such...32 valves/doch cams...I immediately changed to Mobil 1 when I got The Major...not really sure I need to run that oil but it makes me feel better doing it.
Maybe you could change to something similar and see what results from that...if you have not already done so.

What are you talking about? The cam followers have hydraulic adjusters... just like the hydraulic lifters in a pushrod engine. There should be no noise. There is no adjustment. You might hear some noise at the front of the engine from the timing chains. If your MM is properly maintained there should be little to no noise.

mine makes this type of sound. you can only hear it on the drivers side when behind the engine. if my radio is turned down i can slightly hear inside. had the sound when i bought her with 72K, at 88K now and havent had an issue

Mine's always made a noise, like you say, you hear it in the drive thru or next to a wall, but not just driving along. I've put 60,000 on it since, and it still hasn't blown up.

I get a loud tick when it's cold or really hot which is just the fuel injectors, has made the noise for years now.

I have 35,000 miles on mine and it still purrs like a kitten, except when I hit the gas. Then it roars like the BEAST that it is!!! :bows:
I have been using Mobil One since the second oil change.
Even when I leave it at my Las Vegas home unused for 2-3 months there is no clatter or any other funny noises on start-up. Probably a benefit of that good old Mobil One. :banana2:

Hmmm ive had noisey FI before but this seems a bit loud.. i can be in the car...doors closed...driving up to around 2000-2500 rpm normal driving up to street speed 45mph.. i can hear it over exhaust... just seems really excessive.
i mean if i heard a car pull up that sounded like that i would be thinking.. well that engine is about to go.. knocking like crazy.
Oh whoever asked.. i live in Muskogee, Ok.
BTW.. thanks for all the replies!

If you don't put oil in them, they'll break. Trust me.

+1 on that....UGH!
Any chance of a video clip of the noise? They tend to help as I'm sure each person has their own interpretation of what your noise sounds like.

I think the timing set in the front can make some noise as it gets old and stretches/wears. Fuel injectors can make noise, and are sometimes erratic about doing it some times and not others. Otherwise the engines should be very quiet like the modern design they are.
The video is a good suggestion. Be sure to do it away from walls that can echo and confuse the issue.
