I tried the search function on this topic and got no results so Im sorry if has been discussed before. what is your opinion on the mm as being a collector car? I know it was a limited production vehicle so that alone should at least make it a special interest car...someone else on a different topic described the mm as a "cult following" type of car. well I know I had to travel out of state to buy mine last september, as others did, so it really is not a run of the mill car...any thoughts? HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE HERE !

Hagarty and Grundy insurance will insure it as a collector car, so, it must be a collector car. Of course collectables are usually in nice shape, as opposed to being unloved and being beat to death, just sayin'..............

There will always be fans that are into them - most other people will have never even heard of them. Similar to Grand Nationals IMO ;)

All the more reason never to publicly discuss sale prices in a public forum.... Condition, mods? Sure! Price? Hell no.... Never. Why do a buyers work for em?
Let the asking price be public and the rest, between the seller and any really/qualified interested parties..... Otherwise you will only be able to sell your "collector car" for a postage stamp.:o

Collector or classic (25 years old)?
In the year 2028, will folks even know what a Marauder is, or was?
I don't know.
It will always get more $$ and attention than a run of the mill Crown Vic or Grand Marquis, but, how much more?
Again, I don't know.

heck, does anyone really know what a Marauder is even today?
thing is there will always be collectors (us) for cars (like the Marauder)
sometimes I pick up an issue of Hemmings motor news & flip to a random page & theres a make or model of a vehicle I've never even heard of before. but there are people that scour far & wide for what they consider is "collectible". Thus, collector car status truly is in the eye of the beholder

Personally, I don't think the MM is a collector car...yet. Not enough people have any idea what it is, for one thing, and the rest just think it's a Grandpa-mobile with chrome wheels.

Personally, age has nothing to do with it. How about a Pontiac G8 GXP? Or Saturn Sky Redline? Meredith and I have amassed what we consider to be a "collection" of cool cars. Cool is our opinion of each car itself in our "collection" Many people may not like our choices but they are our choices for our collection. Personally I think an Edsel is worthless, however there are plenty of people who consider it to be a "collector" car. Collections, no matter what they consist of are the choice of the collector. So in our case....YES, our 2003 300 A is a collector (Chris and Meredith) car!

I remember when the Edsel was introduced in 1958. At the time, I thought it was the ugliest car on the road; but I was only 8 years old at the time. The oval grille sparked the phrase that it looked "Like a FORD sucking a lemon." Others said that the grill kinda looked like a vagina. On that subject, I really wasn't qualified to speak much at age 8. ;)
Over the years, I have grown to appreciate the Edsel more. It was unique and it was very short lived. Every year at Carlisle, I spend some time on Edsel row taking pics of about 12-14 that show up every year. They are generally located down with the Starliners, Fairlanes, and Hardtop convertibles and other classics from the late 1950's. Most had 2 tone paint schemes. Some even had 3 tone combinations.
What was Ugly back then has now mellowed somewhat and I actually like the styling of the Edsel. It was just out of place during that time. Finding one in showroom condition and still running some 54 years later is amazing. As to the resemblance to the Big V ....... I now can see some sort of resemblance. :o

I agree, I still personally do not find them cool. I can totally appreciate their rarity, the time and effort it takes to restore one and keep it nice. No different than a Cord, Duesenburg, Rolls Royce, etc., etc., I don't have nay of these on my list of must own cars. They are all collectable, valuable, cars just not in my eyes. If given one, it would be sold or traded for something I really want like....http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/buick-gnx

I feel that way about a lot of cars.
When I was a kid, all these sacred 60's cars were just . . . everybody's cars. The high-end Mustangs, Camaros, GTO's and stuff like that got respect, but the Novas, Falcons, Darts, Impalas etc. were grocery-getters that nobody gave a crap about. I understand why guys are doing these cars - there were only so many of the desireable ones made, so after all the Z-28's became garage queens, then any Camaro, then all the Malibu's and so on and so forth until guys were going all-out restoring 6-cylinder Novas. I have a hard time taking some of them seriously at these little local shows - a Mustang II ? Really ? - but I respect the work that goes into them tremendously.

Not I. But, I did fly to Texas to get my second one. :)
With 11k+ of them made about the only way they will go any type of collector status is in another 20 years. Maybe....
Hard part is as people have mentioned its not a car that started any kind of trend, it didn't set any records, it died due to lack of sales, and its platform was killed.
On the flip side of things. It was the most powerful factory panther car offered so it does have that going for it?
I dunno. To close to call really.

I wonder how much reading you gentlemen did when the Marauders first came out, there were many stories in the auto Industry saying the car might fail, remember why? The word then was there was a young Lady(a Ford) in charge of mercury who was passing through in her climb up the ladder. She could really care less about Mercury or Mercury Marauder and spent shXX promoting it. Hell even today I bet 80% if not higher of the american public doesn't know about these cars. Also remember originally they hoping for $29,990!!!!!!!! was the hopeful price, Nope, that didn't work eighter.
But let me ask this, what will you or anyone pay for a 1960 mercury hardtop? Then a 1960 427 Marauder!
GN's, what are they worth? I see them anywhere from $3,000.00 up over $100,000.00 (Barett Jackson Auction) it's I guess what ever you willing to pay for one. there is still quite a few around BUT most are just beat to death! A $4,000.00 GN can hit the $25,000 mark over night if ya trying to bring one back, but I guess all old cars are like that now.
I'm lucky as I bought mine new and know all the bad and good things with it plus never hammered on so I don't think I'll lose money on her ! LOL
You want it to be a collector car? Tell every body it is! thats a start!

Yeah but a lot the big collector cars in our past set new trends or kicked something else's ass. The MM stock really isn't anything spectacular compared to other offerings in 03/04.
GN's were a car that kicked a metric ton of ass and set the standard for sleepers. MM's haven't done that.

The most specific car it was compared to was a 94-96 Impala SS, and unfortunately it was only neck-and-neck with one even though it was ten years younger. Also, frankly, I doubt a stalled/intake/4.10/tune Marauder (what I think most would agree are the most common mods) would take a stalled/intake/4.10/tune SS. I could be wrong about that, but those LT1s still had one hell of a beefy low-end even though they lacked overall power.

they may increase in value and have some collectabilty but they are still a four door sedan. Of course things change over time. 40 years ago few people bought a 4 door Chevelle or Cutlass to be "cool" now you have the Impala, Marauder, CTS V, even the M3 came in a 4-door.
We are more open to a variety of cars being cool, who knows what 10 years from now will bring. I hope to still have MM then as well, but will hopefully have a newer version of something cool too.

Maybe the question isn't will it become a collector car, that's a given, but will it reach iconic status such as the 55-57 Chevy, mid 60's big block Stingrays, real Shelby Cobras, 55-57 TBirds, etc.
No, I don't think so, but most collector cars don't reach that status.
