View Full Version : NITTO 555's

Guys it that time of year again. It's been about 6 months and I need new tires again.

Goodyear no longer makes my Eagle F1's :bigcry:

So I'm thinking of going with the NITTO - NT555 EXTREME ZR's

Here's my question!
HOW DO THEY HANDLE IN THE RAIN?

Everyone running these tires please post up!

The reviews I have read say that they suck in the rain! People who know me know that I don't drive in the rain. But hey **** happens and you never know when you get caught in it! So I really need some good honest feedback.

Not trying to turn this into a big tire debate so please keep this on track! I will probably be ordering a new set this week!

I ran them they are great on dry pavement and in the rain! Its the cold weather that makes you want to use a few four letter words! They turn into bricks
But in Nittos defense they do clearly state its a summer tire and are not recommended for winter months at all
Other than that there hard to beat!

Jake,

You and I rarely drive in the rain and happens only when we get caught in it.

Right after getting my Nitto 555's, I was on a road trip to MERCMAN's for the weekend, I ran into a wall of rain on 65N while rolling at 75MPH.

I did slow a little, but not once did I feel the car was "floating", and she tracked straight as hell.

Water was ponding all over the road and it never jerked the wheel out of my hand when I hit those areas.

A couple other times being caught in the rain was the same scenario... The car felt damn good with no slipping detected or felt.

The tires are a High Performace rated tire, for mainly summer driving and wet conditions.

When it is cold outside, <50, they do slip a little easier, but is to be expected.

I say go for it man!

And they look damn good too...

Plus 2 Doom.... I would have reskinned with em again last week, but fell into a lil better deal on Hankook Ventus rears that were too good to pass up...(Distributor quoted wrong price to the retail outlet I was trading with... Caught the error later on, but honored the original price).

I don't have a problem getting the Eagle F1's. My guy still has a good stock of them. That's never an issue. I just don't want to keep running 6-7 year old tires on my marauder.

And the tire rack link you posted is for a 19 inch tire.

I just need to know how these nittos handle in the rain. My F1's were awesome in the rain! NEVER HAD AN ISSUE.

Thanks for the links BIRDMAN! You are always more than helpful.

Can you find me some cheap nittos? :D

Planning on going with 255/45/ZR18's up front and 265/50/ZR18's out back.
Same setup Mike is using.

on my CV Sport I run 255/50ZR17 Nitto NT555s.
they handle amazing.

last set of tires I had were Goodyear Eagle GTs. the GTs handle rain better in hard cornering but not as well on the street during dry handling compared to the NT555s.

My widened rims I have are for TRACK USE ONLY!

And I run 305's on those. :D

I think 265's out back is good for the street. My F1's are 255's and I love em!

So I'll be going 1 size wider on the rears and 2 sizes wider on the front.

I haven't had any problems at all. I just take it easy from the pedal of course :D

As far as traction I've felt very comfortable. I have driven it a few times on the rain. Not by choice! You won't have any issues taking with its handling.

I run this setup and and very happy with the NITTO tires, like others i dont go out in the rain, but have been caught in the rain and had good grip with the NITTO tires.

Now if you want to spin them, they do leave nice marks heres one of me leaving the ABT tour, i also left a couple at maraderville mvx

I've had the Nitto's 295's out back for a long while. I'm soon ordering a new set of 295 45 18 out back and 255 45 18 out front. I just remembered My front springs and 1 coil cut so it sits a lower in the front. But I don't think the added size up front should be a deal breaker! Man pull the trigger, you know I don't cruise in wet conditions either.

I ran my 555s from the lower Florida Keys through Orlando as TS Sandy dumped a ton of rain on Florida's Turnpike.
Running through DEEP water never hydroplaned, did get blown sideways with gusts up to 50 with over an inch of water standing on the highway@ 65-70 MPH. It wasn't the tires fault, just physics.
IMHO extremely surefooted in the rain.

Jake, we have them on both cars and they suck!!! :mad2: Constantly breaking loose even at low speeds no traction. Squirrely on wet roads and when the temp drops below 65* they become so hard it is like riding on a washboard. I would recommend you go with another brand and leave the 555s for our low horse power KB cars.

265/50-18 is a safe wider size to go with on the rear. If you have traction control then would need to go to a 255/45-18 front for the correct height difference between the front and rear.

Look inside your rear wheels... If there is a "band" with exposed welds on either side, you have widened wheels.... I also would not run 295's on stock wheel widths.....

I run 555's on all 4 corners. Love them. In the cold, they get a bit hard below 40 degrees or so. In the rain they are okay for the limited times I have been caught in ther rain with them. Some folks have issues with them, but to me they have been good.

I have 265's in the rear and 245's up front.

My only issue, my fronts are worn down at ~20K miles. That seemed fast. My alignment is spot on ... so not sure. Gonna try them again once the rain stops.

These are a high performance SUMMER tire. Nitto says NOT to run them in temps below 55 degrees. There is a reason for that. See sentence 1.

I have a set of the 555s - Stock size in front, 265/50 in back. I have the back break loose pretty easily on wet pavement and my car is N/A. Wasn't necessarily cool out either. I would trust my old Avalon more than this car with these tires when the pavement is wet. Hey, they look cool though:D

We had snow unexpectedly almost a month ago - Maybe 1/4 inch and I almost got stuck in a flat intersection - Tires just spun - I was crawling! I wish I could afford to sell these and get something else. it was a bad decision for a DD IMO.

I run the 255/45 on the front and 265/50 on the rear. Excellent dry grip, but in the rain, the grip is not as good as the OEM BFG's. I run Blizzaks in the winter, so I don't care about running these in the cold weather.
