I have been informed that one needs a special tool to install the underdrive pulleys,, not being much of a wrench myself, what tool might this be? Gear puller? Muffler bearing? :help:

The tool required is called a knuuten valve...

Seriously, you need a 3-bolt puller...like this one (http://www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=787) for the harmonic balancer; the water pump pulley requires only an ordinary wrench, I forget the size, and you don't replace the alternator pulley, so that one's easy...

The BIG problem is you may have to lock the transmission. The bolt is real tight on the balancer, and you may turn the engine without ever loosening the bolt. I sprung the few bucks and let my mechanic do this. The procedure is included in the kit, but it was about 8 degrees outside so I decided no...

The crank pulley can be removed with a rubber mallet by hitting the edges and with air tools the bolt can be removed and installed again, HOWEVER I am not advising anyone to do this. All I'm saying is I have done it like that before on other vehicles.

Try Autozone for the crank pulley puller.
With the torque required it's going to be a bear w/out an airgun.

First off my air wrench wasn't strong enough and the 1/2 impact wrench won't fit because it hits the fan housing, so an 18 mm socket and the breaker bar work the best, you will need to get at the nuts on the torque converter to lock the crank in place, a longer 1/2 box wrench worked well. Remove the crank bolt, then remove the large washer that the bolt rest on (don't leave the washer in place) or your harmonic balancer puller will rest on it, puller will have an easy job of it. Use the larger bolt to start the new pullie and then take it out and put the washer back in and the old bolt and touque to spec you will need to move the wrench to the other side of the TQ to retighten the bolt.

Best to let your dealer install them, Dan, it's not a tough job when you own the tools and have the proper setting, like a repair shop. The labor is maybe an hour, hour and a half.

I have not seen underdrive pulleys for an MM. What is used the set for a Mustang Cobra?

Well I can't offer much toolwise...but make sure to have some band-aids and assorted dressings, alchohol...to drink, of course.:P

$51 for complete job, I think it's a 45 minute bill.
