Good morning! I have driven by this car many times over the past year, and finally stopped to take a look. The body, frame, and interior all look to be in decent shape. Not mint by any means, and in my opinion, not worth the asking price. I figured i'll post it up here without the owners knowledge, and who knows, maybe someone will have interest in it. I was not able to speak to anyone as no one was home.

Unless that car has one hell of a drivetrain I think you could get way more car for 15K.

1955 Customline in #3 condition [good] is valued at around 10K-12k & the value for one in fair condition [#4] is around 6K-7K. From the looks of it, this is closer to fair condition due to the rust on the frame rails & floor pans. If equipped with a 6 cyl. engine, discount 15% of the value. Just my:twocents:

15K.....:hmmm:
Chop off 2 doors and drop in a built BOSS 429 with a Toploader and you got a deal!
The 4dr earlier than the '90s usually don't get much interest, most are less than inspiring...
Now the '55 & '56 CV, that's a real car...

That's what my 55 convert looked like, but mine had a darker blue over the light blue, which was odd. (Most two tone blues had the light blue over the dark blue.)
The early OHV Ford 8 cylinder engines were noted for rear main oil leaks.

Ahhh someone who knows his old Fords, my first car was a '57...When my family first moved here to VA in the fall of '61 our back yard backed up to a used car lot... I used to look across at all the fifties stuff that were back lot honeys destined for the scrap yard, most were 10-12 years old...
Anyway next summer when I was 12(we were only there a year) I was out in front of the lot one day and a young guy, his wife and infant were there looking at a '55 2dr sedan... Wasn't much, already rusting on the top of fenders over the headlights, bottom of doors, quarters etc, but the ole Y block ran good(272 I'm guessing)... He took it out and when he came back one of the headlight trim rings fell off due to rust but he was hooked, had to have it... I remember he paid $75(he said) and traded in a '52 Ford with 6cyl that I'd have been afraid to ride across town in, badly rusted, seats were mostly just springs etc... Point is, that '52 was just 10 years old and was barely good enough to be a parts car... Those who say they sure don't make them like they used to, are correct......

55 Ford V8's.
272/162 hp (2 barrel carb);
272/182 hp (4 barrel carb);
292/198 hp,
"Interceptor" 292/205 hp, police use
The 6 had 120 hp
56 V8's (in addition to the above motors)
312/215 hp (2 barrell)
312/225 hp (4 barrel)
312/245 hp (2 4 barrels; TBird option, some regular Fords might have had the motor as well)

The car with 2 4 barrels was rated @ 260 HP, it also had Iskendarian E-2 Cam/Springs, Truck F-8 Exhaust manifolds, with Police Interceptor exhaust pipes, muffler, and tail pipes. I bought one in a Crown Victoria 2 door hardtop, kept until 1960 when my Dad had a wreck, while I was in Japan, and totaled it. It was a nice piece of equipment for that era. Very competitive with 56 Chevrolets with 225 HP 2 4 barrel option.

According to The Complete History of Ford Motor Company by the editors of Consumer Guide:
Quote:
"At midyear, a twin 4 barrel set up with 245 hp was announced as a Thunderbird option. The standard Fords weren't mentioned, though a few may have been built with it."
But, Mercury did offer a 260 hp version (9.7 compression) to maintain power/displacement distance from Ford.
Again, same source.
Looks like you lucked out and got a Ford with a Merc motor.

The Fordamatic trans 272's had about 10 more hp than the stick shift cars,I paid $10 for my two tone brown 55 4 door in decent running shape with less rust than this one has,but that was back in 1967,lol.
PS,those 4bbl carbs back then were some real strange looking son of a guns.

If you had a real "plain Jane" 55 (no chrome on the side at all), you could buy a chrome add-on from, I believe, JC Whitney.
It gave your cheapo 55 Ford the look of the higher priced model. It was an OK mod, but it didn't look 100% factory.
My friend had a 2 dr cheap sedan with the add on trim. It had a V8, 2 barrel, three on the tree. Street racing, he stayed right with 55 Chevys with comparable motors (265/2 barrel).
My boss back then had a 56 Ford 2 dr wagon, not Chevy Nomad level, but nice looking anyway.
He had the TBird engine (red emblem on the front fender), three speed, OD.
Maybe because the OD trans came with a lower rear end ration, but, that car could run.
Talking old Fords, I think it was the 64 Ford that advertised a 3 1/2 speed trans, column shift. First gear was full synchro.

Another 55/56 difference.
55 instrument panel had a tinted plastic cover over the speedometer.
In 1956, Ford went big on safety, and the cluster was larger and had round gauges. Plus, no more tinted plastic.

My father bought a 56 2 door sedan Mainliner in Spring Mist Green (pale green) fron a guy at work who bought a new 57 as soon as they came out.
It had a T Bird motor, solid lifters,3 on the tree with overdrive, that sucker would honk.
We used to drive out Rte. 12 after going past Super Dawg, from Chicago to Wauconda,IL. where he was building our new house.
I remember standing on the back seat looking at the speedo and he'd do 100 mph all the way out.
No speed limits then, and no stop signs or stop lights all the way out.
Once when we going out that way there were 2 young guys in a sharp 56 Victoria convertible doing about 75,the old man noticed their right front wheel cover, the big heavy fancy expensive ones, was wobbling and they were gonna lose it.So he pulled alongside and rolled his window down, hollered at them and pointed to the wheel to let them know. They must've figured he wanted to race so they stepped on it and got up to 90 or so,he tried again and they stood on it,he got fed up,put his foot through the firewall and walked away from them.
The last I saw of them they looked like they were going backwards.
It must've been embarassing to be a couple of young dudes driving the top of the line Ford with a T Bird motor and get beat by a 50 year old guy with a plain jane sedan and a kid in it too.
I love the last line in the movie True Grit where John Wayne jumps that fence and tell's "Sis","Come See a Fat Old Man Sometime"!
Talking old Fords, I think it was the 64 Ford that advertised a 3 1/2 speed trans, column shift. First gear was full synchro.
That was '63 and were the forerunner of the Top Loader 4-speeds... Ford's O/D transmissions continued to be the old side cover Borg Warner, with non-synchronized 1st & were discontinued in the car lines I believe after '67...

Thanks for embedding! This thread has turned into something very educational for me...thank you all for the wisdom of the older Fords. I think this car would be worth a third of his asking price. If I had the cash, I'd make an offer.

OK I had to put my two cents in just for the heck of it. It's definitely a 1955 customline 6 cylinder. Probably worth about four grand on a good day. NOW about 55 Fords !
I have a 55 Mainline Business coupe that I am currently putting on an 04 MARAUDER frame with the complete running gear. You guys may remember the car, it was Silver Burch and built by Reinhart. Supercharged. Wrecked about a year ago
The 55 Ford has the same wheelbase but is 4 inched narrower than the Marauder. I have the Marauder stripped down and am using the stock floor pan to mount the widened 55 to. A big project that I hope to bring to the Marauder meet in Atlanta

I had a 56 customline with a 55 doghouse and it originally had the 272 and I had a Merc 312 installed, which claimed 10 additional hp more the Fords 312.
