I'm trying to get a feel of how many miles are put on brake pads before changing them. I have a car with 35,000 miles and brakes feel fine. Soooo do I change pads now before they effect the rotors? Think I'll go with Hawks ceramic pads, both front and back, ideas??? My car is a MKZ.

I got 177K miles on my OEM's and they would have made 200K but I figgered I'd put on new ones!!:bows:

Note: I replace the front rotors numerous times due to warping but the pads were original the whole time!!

Most of those miles were highway miles but most of my CV's only got about 75K miles on the OEM's??

The Marauder is simply the BEST car I've ever owned!!:bows:

Almost all newer cars have brake pad sensors that will give you fair warning Ed. I have had pads last from 15,000 to 100,000. Can't really guess that. Next time your in for an oil change take up the offer most shops hand out for free tire rotation and brake check. Or schedule a time with me (if possible..) and I'll set you straight.

How many miles they last all depends on how it is driven. With the factory wheels it is pretty easy to check the thickness of the pads w/o even removing the wheels. Sometimes you may have to move the car slightly to get a spoke out of the way. You can either do it visually or use a gauge like this, similar to the factory tool.

I replaced my pads at 70,000 miles. They probably would have lasted until 90-100K. Have never had pads last that long so I had the same type OEM pads put on it. I'm happy. :D

Ummm I have maybe 25mi on mine...

Just repl at 45Kmi because they were at less than 1/2 and I replace at 1/3... The mid 50K mi '98 & '07 MGM's still have well over 1/2, maybe Marauder had something to do with the supercharger???(hard braking from 100+ MPH)

I blame Bazzlebear. 😉 After all he doesn't quite understand waiting for his turn to do a burnout leaving a car show. Let me paint a picture. Before my pedal is even matted I here the whine of his Eaton 30 feet behind me. My car doesn't hook as well as his/yours and two seconds in the only thing I see is his windshield!
Totally organized burn out exit, simple rules of good conduct, somebody a little itchy on the trigger, brakes to the floor.. Justbob shakes head, continues into third leaving a 60' high wall cloud. 😜

Remember we were cruising in your car, and he was following us...he flies past as we were about to make a turn and he stops to do a burnout in the middle of the street.

Geez guy's thanks for the info, sounds like I have a lot more time than I thought, in the past cars I owned 40,000 used to be the mileage then ya would hear the squeal but I guess these new pads are lasting longer, BUT 75,000-100,000! Thats something I never expected.
Something else to check in the spring!

What are the brand and material brake pads you guys are using?

Did a full replacement at around 80k miles. The fronts were vibrating a little and the rear's weren't to bad. Not to shabby, spent about 270$ and swapped everything in about 2 hours. Also threw in a brake bleed. I love how cheap these cars are to maintain.

I have NO IDEA about brakes on an MKZ.

Just don't run the Hawk HPS if you want life of the pad. I run them on my mustangs as their street pad and usually get about 20k out of them if I'm semi gentle.

My car has roughly 64K since I bought it from the dealer and it had 64K on it then. So either 64K sofar or 129K sofar.

I had Hawk ceramic pads put on my MM a couple weeks before last year's Looseville gathering; mileage at that time was ~90k. Shop said I probably could get another 20k on the OEM pads, which surprised me as I was in the mindset I was overdue for new pads.

SB had a little over a 100K before pad and rotor change.

Front pads were changed at 106,000miles (still had 25% pad left). Rotors were turned, taking-off a RCH to freshen-up the surface.

Thanks guy's, look's like I'm in good shape at least till this spring and then I'll just take a peek at them. But from the feed back so far is surprizing to me but consider my age. Look's like w my wife is safe for a while!

^ This should be the question! Pads last a long time, but the rotors sure don't. I like my Marauder, but I sure didn't like the brakes. Hence the Wilwoods.

I just bought whole set up for mine...I'm at only 63k miles, mostly highway too. Visually the pads look good but the brakes feel too soft under unexpected stopping...plus have some vibration in front.

I'm beginning to think perhaps I'll just replace front rotors and perhaps pads before diving into rear...not looking forward to getting those rotors off. Sounds like several of you have done fronts at different times than back with no problems.

You think I'm ok trying fronts first and see how it does?

I just spent last weekend replacing all 4 rotors, pads and upgraded to TCE SS Brake lines. I am 70,000 miles as well. My pads are in great condition and there really wasn't a dire need to replace the brakes, but i just wanted to get it done.

Getting the rotors isn't that bad. just take your wheel off, put your lug nuts back on and take a sturdy sledgehammer and hit your rotor in between the lugs. The reason you put the lug nuts back on is so in case you accidently hit your lugs!

anyways just keep rotating the rotor and keep hitting hit. It will come off!

You can also google or youtube a video of this process.

Just did them last week - 135,000k. 4 sets of pads and rear rotors.

Changed out my front brakes at 40,000 miles when my front rotors warped ,felt pulsating in brake pedal .But original pads had a lot of life left .Installed OEM type pads semi-metallic.

Good choice on new rotors and pads. Harder pads tend to exacerbate rotor warpage, which I believe is an under-capacity design flaw. Only real solution is big $$ for big brakes.

I went 65,000 on my first set of fronts and 75,000 on the second set of fronts.
The rears lasted till 107,000 miles. I now have 154000+
