View Full Version : How Much Oil Does Your Catch Can Catch ?

I've asked this in the other "Catch Can" threads without success, let's try it on it's own :

How much oil does your catch can catch between oil changes ? Drops ? Ounces ?

It seems like enough of these things have been in use long enough to determine their value.

( And yes, "How Much Wood Does Your Woodchuck Chuck ?" will be next ;) )

lets say its only catching 1 ounce, every 3000 miles. in 100k, thats 33.33 ounces, a quart is 32 ounces. doesnt seem too bad? but if you spray it on in a fine mist, and let it burn on the intake untill you spray again....that could be some nasty build up. ctrlraven has seen this first hand on his car and blown3.8, whos an auto mechanic just posted a pic on my thread about it.

My intake was the same oil slicked mess as most MM, S/C, or N/A it doesnt matter!

A catch can is a must on these cars:mad2:

You're missing out !

Imagine how much more fun you could have with a woodchuck !

I'm going with breather units when I put my new engine in.

Never really measured how much mine captures, but I would probably say 2-3 oz per 3000 miles.

The only down side to open breathers as I've used on 2 of my cars is the oil smell. It just depends on how picky you are. Also depending where they are they leave a mist/mess around them. If you go open do a remote mounted can. Its what I eventually went with to get rid of the mess.

I'll deal with the smell if it means keeping an 8-9k motor clean. lol Moroso remote mounted can is probably what I would do to avoid any mess.

If you're not going to try to vent the stuff out and burn it, why not just plug them up ?

Yup, smell got to me, as well as the misting.

Went from breathers to a musclemerc catch can, get maybe 2 tbsp every 3,000 - 4,000 miles when I drain it.

You can't plug your crank case ventilation. It would develop pressure and squeeze oil out of gaskets and put back pressure on pistons killing HP and can do other things. EVERY engine has blow by. N/A engines typically don't have much unless your rings are shot.

Yes the intakes have oil on them, but its such a minor amount it doesn't matter. You guys realize there is oil in the chamber from the cylinder walls right? Supercharged engines are built with slightly larger ring gaps for the extra heat/expansion involved. THAT is when you really need a catch can/breathers. A lot of folks put vacuum pumps on and pick up 20-30hp on higher (500+)HP cars.

If its a 99.9% street .1% Track do a recirculating can. Smelling like oil/car after a while gets old, not to mention when your female occupant gets annoyed by it. I'll bet if I ran my car before/after dyno run with a cleaned intake vs how it sits at 102k I wouldn't see a gain. If anyone wants to pay the dyno time I'll do it. :)

If you guys are sucking down so much oil that the engine is running different on an N/A car you need to do a leak down test, not a catch can. But if it helps ya sleep better at night.

Hp is not what im personally after, im trying to keep the motor as clean as possible. If someone is looking to increase hp, your money is better spent elsewhere.

If you defeat the PCV system you will DEFINITELY shorten your engine's life!!:argue:

Read up on the benefits and decide for yourself!! PCV is a GOOD and necessary system for a street car!!

As far as catch cans go....I think they are unnecessary but to each his own??

A crank case "evac system" is the ideal setup but once again not necessary on a street car.....IMHO!!:shake:

DO NOT close off the CC system or you WILL have problems!!
