Very rare indeed....
Hideous body style, but that tri-power 430 V8 is sweeet!

Can't imagine what that aluminum air cleaner housing is worth!

I couldn't agree with both statements more.
That is a very cool car, regardless of being fugly.

In our dreams they never overheat, leak oil or have slipping transmissions, doesn't stop me from owning older stuff though...

Back in the early 60's, a friend of mine was stationed in San Diego (Navy).

This guy was a rock solid MoPar guy, but he said that one of the quickest cars on the street was a 58 Merc with the 430/3-2's motor, three speed on the column.

The car was a 2 dr, not a 4 dr.

For a MoPar guy to praise a Merc the way he did, that car must have been something for it's day.

Yup, thing must have been a torque monster.

If you guys have the time, read this thread about the owner of a 1965 Chris Craft who is rebuilding the boat's original Lincoln 430 'MEL' engine! (In a 21 foot Chris Craft.....Hang on and say YAHOOOOOO!)
Beautiful Hi-performance rebuild and pretty eye candy parts on this Big Block beast....It's going to end up being like a Mercury Super Marauder engine, only in a boat.
He has lots of pictures of the build and information on these 430 Big Blocks.
Towards the end of the thread you will see how he is using a VERY RARE 430 Tri-Power set up and also a set of those VERY RARE Edelbrock M4 exhaust manifolds that the Mercury Monterey seller has in his Ebay ad.
Those 430 MEL Big Block 3 duece manifolds and M4 water cooled exhaust manifolds must command a VERY HIGH price....$$$$$......

"The blocks were heavy, with the 430 engine weighing in at close to 800 pounds..." And we think Cobra CI engines are heavy....

"The 430 with it's immense crank and bore, produced horrendous amounts of low end torque, between 400 and 500 foot pounds at under 4000 rpm..." Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about!!! :bounce:

"So here is the deal: Essentially I am building a Chris Craft supersport with a marauder package. It never existed, but I am going to make it look like it did..and that will take some carefully crafted custom parts to do it."

Great find, Joe! Thanks for posting!

I don't think its fugly. It just has the 50s car style.

Not the best looking 58 (check out the 58 Impala), but not the worst (58 Olds, 440 lbs of chrome).

2 dr would make a big difference.

57's were basically same style, but nicer, IMHO. Bumpers weren't as huge, and the car had a real grille.

Agreed but that holds true for almost all '58(yes Chev incl)... Only decent model was '58 Plymouth, basically a '57 with quad headlights that actually looked good, Corvette & maybe the big T-birds(unlike the gaudy Edsel they sold well)...

58 Pontiac Bonneville was a pretty good looking car except for the rocket ship chrome on the sides.

But, that was the era of styling back then.

1958 Chrysler products were pretty much warmed over 57's. 58 Plymouth was a step over the 57, but Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler took a step backward.

The 58 Chevy and Pontiac shared a one year body style, which was not the norm back then.

Neither the 57 BelAir nor 59 Impala have anything in common (body, not drivetrain) with the 58 models.

You could almost say the same about the big 59 Fords and Mercs. Very little in common with the 58 and 60 models. (Although, the 59 Ford did offer the 57/58 retractable hardtop option.)

Agreed.

1958 was a styling anomaly for Detroit, preceding and succeeding years were definitely different styles.

Even though the '59 Ford as a different body style, the '57, '58 & '59 Fords were all the same chassis, which is why the convertible hard top was continued... The '56 Ford basic chassis can be dated back to the '52 models... 1960 brought a total redesign that lasted through the '64 models...

You're probably correct, but it was a huge styling change. 59 Ford's ran on an increased 118" wheelbase, so it was a pretty massive change.

As for the Merc, according to The Complete History of Ford Motor Company/By the Auto Editors of Consume Guides, the Merc ran "on a new (and still exclusive) platform with longer wheelbases than ever".

FYI, great book, if you're a Ford guy. Covers 1896 to 1997. Many photographs.

Agreed on the 60...64. I got the best of the lot, IMHO.
