Cylinder Head Temp Sensor

While checking for some ABS codes I did an enhanced code reading and got a code for

P1288 - Cylinder Head Temp Sensor Out Of Self Test Range

Car has been running fine and I haven't changed anything. I assume it's just the sensor that is bad and needs to be replaced.

I didn't think these cars have a sensor for cylinder head temps. Just coolant.

I cant remember witch one....but I think one of the sensors in the cross over tube is listed as a cylinder head sensor.

I broke both during my eaton swap and when I took them to the dealership they said the part #s came back to a cylinder head temp sensor and coolant temp sensor? Not interchangeable either.

I believe the coolant temp sensor is the one on the passenger side, and the cylinder head temp sensor is on the driver's side.

My ScanGauge II has a Cylinder Head Temp reading that is always 2* above water temp so I called and they told me the motor has no sender but that they use special programming to get it......SURE they do.......uh...."water temp + 2*":rolleyes:!!

Chris, to my knowledge this could lead to increased fuel to cool the cylinder and pulled timing Worst case scenario. Probably losing 1 or 2 MPG.

It's hard to figure out mpg loss because of it since I'm using winter gas and my mpgs drop 2-3 normally during winter. I just need to hurry up and get all the little things for my new motor and get it done.


While searching the forum

I found this tidbit

the sensor is located on the crossover pipe near the alt, but you have 2 sensors the driver side 1 is to the gauge in the dash cluster and the passnger side 1, thats the one the dealer says is the cyclinder head temp sensor is what the PCM reads to work your cooling fan so becareful on which of the sensor has failed! if the temp gauge gives a reading on the dash then the 1 on the left side is still good and right side that the PCM reads from has failed and your fan might not come on while driving!

I was going to post that I thought one sensor was for the gauge and one for the PCM, and that neither one was a true cylinder head temp, but I wasn't sure of that as it was so long ago.

One of the temp sensors in the crossover pipe is used for cyl head temp. This sensor is used ONLY to control the fail safe cooling feature.
