Make sure when you put it into park that it's fully locked into Park and you hear a click.

It's the Park Neutral Safety Switch. If it's not fully seated/locked into Park when you go to start it will not start as it thinks it could possibly be in Reverse. It's also meant to prevent the key being removed when the vehicle is in Reverse, Drive, 2 and 1 gears.

A few times in the past when I've turned my car off I've had to bump the shifter forward to get it to click fully into Park before it allowed me to remove the key.

I never bothered to fix mine even if it is the issue, I just make sure I push the shifter up until I hear the click to know it's locked.
