View Full Version : water pump? whats the best ?

So im about to do the timing chains on my mm. And while im going to have the water pump off I figure I might as well replace it. I read some on it and see that electric pumps aren't worth it. So im wondering if there is a good mechanical pump that will move more coolant since I have underdrives. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks guys.

The EMP/Stewart is more efficient. More flow using less parasitic drag. If it has the same design, it'll be just as efficient. Btw, if it similar, can you get 2? :D

I'm running a Stewart EMP pump!

The electric ones are crap!!!

I am running an EMP/Stewart and can tell ZERO improvement over a stock pump other that the impeller looks nicer.....BEFORE you install it!!:shake: After the installation they actually look identical!!:rolleyes:

OEM is fine for a street car...IMHO!!:beer:

No need to remove the WP to change the timing chains. If your OEM works then leave it alone.
Why are you changing the chains? Or do you mean guides?

OEM modular pumps are pretty decent. Only issue I've seen is with the Electrics. Even the high dollar ones fail or can't cool enough in heat. A friend of mine left from Utah to Vegas. First hot day he drove his stang it over heated (with the pump working) Put a cheapo autozone one on and all is well.

Been running my Meziere for years with no problems, though my Marauder is definitely not a daily driver.
I like being able to turn the key to 'accessories' and let the electric pump run while in the cool down lanes at the strip.

I'm changing the guides but I figured while I was in there I might as well do the chains and stuff to. I wanted to do a pump because if I let the car idle for 10 min or so it over heats because of the underdrives. I might just ditch the underdrives instead

Never had any overheating issues with my car when I had u/d pulleys on it, can't say I've ever heard anyone else have issues either. :dunno:

Maybe the pump is junk then. At idle I dont get good heat either

What Rex said. I have had U/D's for years and no issues with cooling.

Question.. What's your idle speeds in Park and Drive?

Most of us raise the idle with our tuners to compensate for RPM loss.

I didn't get a tuner with the car the p.o. lost it. I know my idle is to low its at about 600 rpm. I'm working with brenspeed at the moment as they tuned the car originally and just did a good friend of mines mm. Our cars have matching issues in a couple tune related areas so there going to get his car fixed and then hook me up with the new tune and tuner.

EMP/Stewart here. Hard to tell if it offers any improvements, but no problems either. Can't do much for less that $200.00 anyways.

What Rex said. I have had U/D's for years and no issues with cooling.What Mike and Rex said ^^^

U/Ds on Bunny-Lady's car for 4-5 years now...no issues of any kind.

I just got one.

They also have some good info on their website on how to get the best cooling for the mod motor.

Additional Cooling System Improvements

It is important that the fan settings in your tune are set up properly to see the best possible heat dissipation from your cooling system. Otherwise a low temp thermostat will only be effective when the vehicle is moving because heat cannot be removed unless there is air passing through the radiator. Typically with our 170° thermostat installed your cooling fan(s) should be set to turn on between 184-190° and shut off between 176-182°, if not then re-flash your tune with the appropriate settings.

Water transfers heat more effectively than antifreeze so we recommend using the lowest concentration of antifreeze possible for your climate along with a product like Redline Water Wetter. Just make sure you have enough antifreeze in your coolant to keep it from freezing in the winter and always run no less than 20% in a street car. We do not recommend adding Water Wetter to coolant that is more than 40% antifreeze.

Most people think a larger radiator will improve the capacity of the cooling system but a big factor that is often overlooked is airflow. Increasing airflow will have a dramatic effect on the cooling ability of any radiator which is why most choose to do so when prepping a vehicle for race use. Some common ways to get more air through the radiator are:


Increase the size of the lower air dam

Box in the radiator to force air to flow through it and not around it

Additional hood and fascia vents

Additional or more powerful cooling fans


This is also why you never want to remove or obstruct the lower air dam on a modern vehicle. Not to mention it will reduce the life of the radiator fan(s) and could even cause overheating.
