You asked a similar question several months ago ...

Me and friend was talking and I said they made 200 and something, he's think 5000.. I told Him no way....

You can find the full breakout of the 11,052 MM produced (7,838 in 2003 and 3,214 in 2004) here >>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=58208&highlight=options

Black and Silver were produced in both years. Blue was 2003 only. DTR was 2004 only.

BTW -- 328 Blue MMs (all 2003 300B models) --- 215 with Light Flint Interior and 113 with Dark Charcoal Interior.

And the approximate distribution by State (Original and Estimated Remaining in November 2010)

Need to find out from Steve if the I think it was 14 SB that went to the crusher(paint issues) were vin-ed or not. Might be only 11,038.

Oh Goody ..... let's throw another number out there to further confuse this simple issue.

Total Production has been 11,052 since the beginning. FPG totals support this.

Someone posted recently they were talking with Steve Babcock at MV10 and he said the first few Sb's off the assembly line had issues with the color not matching on the plastic pieces and the metal parts. He said Ford crushed them instead of just repainting.

I too believe their are 11,052 but it is a question Steve should clarify.:)

We need an "Ask Steve" page so we can eliminate the :bs: from the truth. How about it Mary, Dan, Mike and Bawb?

Only numbers 1 through 10 were Signature Edition cars, but it's important to note that these are not the order in which they were built. For example, my KB is #10, the last number in the "Signature Edition" series, but it was the fourteenth car built. That's because I reserved #10 in February 2003 (while Kenny & Co. were building #7, I think), but it took a while before a silver birch became available for conversion.

I also had a chance to confirm with Steve Babcock at MMX some confusion about the painting of '03s. It was originally thought that the painting process was changed in 2004, because the guys at St. Thomas liked building the car so much but didn't like the way they were painted, and the process was changed for the start of the '04 model year.

What actually happened was that, when silver birch cars were starting production in April 2003, the painting was whacked. Metal didn't match urethane parts, etc., and the first 14 silver cars went to the crusher because of the bad paint (as weird as that sounds, apparently it was cheaper than stripping-and-repainting them). Between April and late May the painting process was refined and installed at St. Thomas in late May for production going forward (and so production of silver birch could resume). Cars painted from late May 2003 going forward all benefitted from the new painting process.

What I don't know (nor does anyone else, it seems), it whether those 14 cars led to a gap in serial number count. By that I mean no one knows whether there are 14 serial numbers assigned to cars that ended up in the crusher. If serial numbers aren't attached until later in the process, maybe not, but no one remembers.

Another piece of Marauder lore for the history books.

I heard that they were saved from the crusher by an MM Rescue organization, painted DTR, and shipped to Kentucky for sale at premium prices. ;) Mike got one.

Yes that was it^^^^ Blue. If the SB were assigned numbers I would think they SOLD 14 less than the total claimed built and we think were sold. Can't remember the total for '03 but I think it was like 417 so did they really SELL 403? That's the gist of what I was getting at.:)

STAPRap may have the answer to that question if he is still around.

I find it hard to believe that a car would be crushed for a paint job unless they stripped all of the usable MM stuff out of it and just crushed the shell/body worth $5K. Then it kinda makes sense. The parts could then go into another MM shell. No foul. No harm. I also find it somewhat disconcerting that 14 SBs rolled off the line before someone figured out the paint looked like crap (in the words of Mr. Man ;) )

Maybe these "crushed" cars were never counted in the 11,052 number since they never got technically produced and were never assigned a VIN. Who knows? We probably never will. "When the Legend Becomes Fact .... Print the Legend" (The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence).
