My recent adventures with puting the snow tires on the MM, and taking them off, and putting them back on again has gotten me thinking about buying an electric impact wrench to speed the work.

So - this post is to solicit recommendations from people that have one and are happy (or have one and want me to avoid it - like Harbor Freight).

(Yes - I have a torque wrench for the final tightening.)

Ive used my dads craftsman one before ay it does the job. We use battery dewalt impact guns at work to tighten vic couplings and ive heard a few guys using them to take off lug nuts.

I have the 18v 1/2 drive snap on one and I hate it. Never use it and dont care for it. Cant break lugs to save its life and its so big and bulky to do anything else. Id stick to hand tightening then torque.

Very good for the money!

I have the Matco 1/2 and love it. I'd recommend looking at torque specs and comparing prices. The lithium ion battery impacts make the world of difference compared to ni-cad battery powered ones.

Snap Off tools are great for professional mechanics, but what about us shadetree guys who don't want to spend $700 for an impact wrench?

my buddy has the 18v 1/2" drive one from Dewalt and loves it. Super convenient since that's what the rest of his tools run on too.

For $500.00 ya can get a compressor and a whole bunch of air tools, in fact if ya go to Harbor freight ya get change back! Such a deal!
I have one of them old timers that never run's outta air that will be here a long time after I'm gone.

I have a Dewalt 1/2" drive electric impact, I was going to buy a cordless, but for how often I use it I didn't want to deal with dead batteries. It works great, but if something is severely rusted I still have to get out my breaker bar just for the first 1/4 turn. I know it was less than $200

My dad has an Ingersoll-Rand that he has had for 50 years, still works like a champ.

My dad just got the DeWalt for himself for Christmas. He likes it so far. We're both skeptical that it'd do something like a crank bolt, but for everything else it seems to have the beans to loosen whatever's bolted.

I used a corded one in the mid '70s before I bought a compressor, and would still use it if it hadn't worn out years ago... As far as battery units, figuring the battey has a limited lifetime, I'd never buy one unless I was using it almost every day...

If you're just using it occasionally, in the garage or driveway, get a corded one. Make sure it has a minimum of 200ft/lbs breakaway torque.

I use cheap battery impacts for the drag strip to switch out drag tires, if it gets stolen/broken in the pits I'm not out much. 18v l/ion dewalt for work. And corded electric at home for general work, good for taking exhaust apart, lack of batteries make it lighter, etc. If I really need a bolt removed I use a snap on air impact, the bolt either breaks torque or breaks in half.

I have been using my corded Craftsman for more than 20 years. When we go to the track, I have a cordless 19 volt, also a Craftsman. It makes speeding on the slicks much faster and easier.

And yes, I do use my Brown Engineering Torque wrench to finish the job of tightening. If you haven't gotten one of these Tq wrenches yet...what are you waiting for?
