Yeah, yeah TWSS. :P

Has anybody else bent there rear pinion shaft  or am I the only one. I can't remember any recent threads on this

Are you talking about your rear end pinion shaft? Like Ring and pinion shaft? I have no idea how that would even be possible unless the car was in a horrific accident, but the rear end would be destroyed let alone the car!

Yes rear end pinion shaft. And no accidents either.

Mine snapped in half

Was it at the track or something?

Mine's a DD. I gues the JMOD and hair dryer are too much for it.

I was at a traffic light, went to turn left and BOOM. The accelerator was pushed less than a third when it happened. At that moment I was so thankful for my Ford Basic Care Warranty. I never got to see the part, but I was told it was the pinion shaft. It destroyed all the parts in the rear end except the axles and the housing.

I think someone is "SPOOFING" you.......GODZILLA can't bend a Pinion Shaft!! :shake:

Wow, I guess you knew when yours got bent.

I have NO idea when mine got bent. I'm still gingerly driving it around. I had the axels done about a month ago and the rear pinion seal was leaking so, I had it replaced. Ever since then I've had a "Hum" in the rear end. I took it back yesterday and we put it on the lift and saw a slight wobble in the yolk. We figured the it was a faulty rear pinion seal. We had a new part delivered and installed the new one and the wobble is still there.

And thanks to Jimlam56 :bows:, I'll be getting his take out stock 3.55's and will be puting them in place next week with a set of new bearings.

Could be a pinion bearing issue

I would say when you did the first seal you did not re loctite the pinion nut, you say it has had a noise every since then. The noise is the gears are not meshed correctly. Long before you would "bend" a pinion shaft you would strip the teeth off of the pinion. Without a trans brake, huge tires, awesome suspension, and massive horsepower your Marauder has no chance of hurting a pinion that way.

So your saying that there is good possiblity that when the the nut was put back on it wasn't tightened or torqued properly ?????? Hence the torque twists and pinion shaft bend?????

I can pretty much guarantee that pinion is not bent. Have them diassemble that pumpkin and recheck everything before you destroy the rear end.

I agree it would be near impossible to bend the pinion gear shaft. It's the bearing...

It is the bearing - ask me how I know!

I had someone replace the pinion seal because it was leaking. He didn't replace the crush sleeve and did not get the torque right. It was over tightened and the bearing was wiped! Made a very loud groan at all speeds.

Did a complete rebuild a year ago and no troubles since.

Yes, its because it was left loose...the bearing is bad. You could not "twist" that shaft in a normal situation...maybe in a machine holding the gear and twisting but never in a stock type car...there is not enough traction and the teeth on the gears won't withstand the force it would take.

Look at it this way, our local street car hero has a 3450lb 66 GTO, its powered by a 1850 horse BBC, its a full drag car, runs 7.22 in street trim...he has spit the teeth out of the back of the rear end....but NEVER bent a pinion...

The shaft is most likely not bent - any wobble observed is most likely due to the failed bearing!

So, do, you think I should just have them do the bearings etc and not change the shaft?????

I wish I would of got a vid of it on the lift. To me, the thing looks bent and has a wobble. There is however a boat load of metal on the mag screw. For sure the bearing is toast, I'm just not sure on the shaft.

You need to rebuild the rear end...I would change the gears, bearings, posi clutches if you have over 75,000 miles....check the axle bearings as well...

I don't think you understand what that shaft looks like....The shaft you keep referring to is half of number five, not the ring gear part...the ring and pinion come as a matched set, not separate.

In your rear end the following numbers are done...

7,10,11,19,13,12,5,17,18

There is however a boat load of metal on the mag screw. For sure the bearing is toast, I'm just not sure on the shaft. You won't know until you get it apart. If the bearing is too far gone, it may have damaged the surface of the pinion gear shaft. You might get lucky and it's just the bearing, but if there was that much wear metal generated it's going to be everywhere and a very thorough cleaning of the entire works is needed.

I made the mistake of not doing a thorough enough cleaning when I replaced the axle shafts in Mary's car, and they were both ruined 2 years later.

I guess we'll see when she's apart.

Being hardened steel, you would think it would tend to shater and break rather than bend under the torque twist.

CORRECT! This is why we say it's not a bent pinion. Here are my 4.10's from last summer. I dove two miles on this too! :D

HOLY CRAPOLA .

I think in my case, the tech didn't torque tighten the pinion seal correctly and prolly collapsed bent the pinion bearing during a JMOD WOT 2nd gear shift :burn:.

Results are in.

Got a used ring and pinion from Jimlam56, and had it put in yesterday with new bearings. Now she is as quiet as a church mouse and runs out smoothly. Thanks again to Jim for the gears :bows:.

It ended up being just the bearing that was worn out and was sloppy as heck which causd the vibration.
