After filling up my car yesterday I jumepd in it and the inside smelled really strong of fuel fumes. What could cause this.
Also when I got to work the trunk also smelled of fumes. The car had not been driven for a week or so. Could that have anything to do with it?

If you filled it to the rim of the filler, you went to high, gas was in the overflow which you are smelling.

If that is what it is I will be very happy :)
I went in and grabbed a coffee so I was not there when it shut itself off. That could have very well been the problem.
I never tap off either. I learned not to do that with the whole mustang engine light thing.
Thanks for the reply

I do that all the time in mine and have never smelled fuel.
I fill it to the brim, too. I figure that's the most accurate way to check mileage, by knowing that you have a completely full tank each time. Never have smelled anything funny, except after eating frijoles.

jettle, am wondering if the work on replacing the sound system is done yet? (seen you other post) Ok flame me for putting 2 and 2 together but, mabe while mounting something in the trunk, ie- subwoofer, ect, you drilled a mounting screw into the fuel tank? I remember reading another post about this. Seems the tank is right above the rear axle and easy to puncture from within the inside of the trunk. I sure hope this isnt the case, as smelling raw fuel inside the car would sure worry me. Someone else on here did it and didnt find out till they smelled it later. Good luck with it I hope its nothing serious..... :burnout:

I dont think I punctured the tank...At least I hope I didnt....
The smell of fuel seems tobe gone but my check engine light is on now. I am guessing the Marauder is like the mustang and if the tank is overfilled or the gascap is not sealed off properly the check engine light can come on for a while....Am I right???
If I was stupid enough to drill a hole in my fuel tank I should ahve my keys taken away...I hope I didnt do that.
Wouldnt it always smell of fuel if I did that?
How close is the tank to the package tray?
I looked it up in the shop manual before I put the stereo in and it looked like there is quite a gap. I drilled the first hole really slow too and the bit never touched anything after going through the tray.

This is not going to be a cheap fix is it.....Ok I'll take em. Sorry about the mishap. Turns out I know a couple of other folks who've done the same. I would recommend you probably replace rather than repair the tank. :flamer:

Yeah I am thinking the same thing....
Does anyone have an idea of what a fuel tank costs?

Here is another thought....I have a full tank of gas right now. Is it safe to drive the car until the level drops? If not What can I do to get the fuel out of the car???

mine was done by drilling the trunk. it is 600.00 for the tank on a 04. if you drilled anywhere on the floor below the amp tray you did drill into the tank.

I have the tank half way out. I cant get the fuel fitting off so I tried to remove the whole fuel pump unit. The friking exhaust is in the way or I would have had the tank out two hours ago. Seems there is always somthing like this that goes wrong.
I can see the hole... its really small...I am not going to trash the tank I am going to take it to a weld shop here in town and have them seal it.
If I ever get the tank free....
Jettle, can't you just stick some bubble gum into the hole to seal it? Seriously, this sounds like something I would do. Totally innocent action, with totally bad results. Hate to hear that it happened, but glad that you found the problem before anything really bad happened.

I did the same thing once on a '79 GM I owned. Being young and less wise at the time, I ended up cutting out a hole in the trunk body large enough for me to apply an epoxy patch to the tank. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Anyway, the patch worked :)
So anyway, your not the first to make this mistake,
