Anyone with an aftermarket moonroof have any problems? I know some cars had them installed years ago. Something rubs me the wrong way when I think about cutting a giant hole in my roof!

(I have a stock one too, * but the OP is asking about aftermarket *)
Depends where you go for it.
They are NOT what they were in the 70s and 80s.
Much, much better! Just ask around for a reputable place.

I have an aftermarket in my car...if I had my choice it would not be there. It does not leak but there is wind noise (not a lot) Also, They have to cut a brace out of the roof when they instal it. My headliner is my only real complaint, they just knocked it loose and left it hangin when they did it... I have actually purchased the over head console, the roof brace and I am working on getting a roof skin so when I have my car repainted I can remove the roof.

I would contact Webasto they put a moon roof in my pickup truck, they do great work plus they are oem for a lot of auto manufacturers

There is, of course, the option of a "sunroof" instead.
Then it just "pops-up" at the back - or comes right out; instead of having all the mechanical stuff inside under the headliner.

I have an aftermarket webasto on mine. I agree with Curless the only downside of it is the wind noise and the hangin headliner. Besides that I was able to get the moonroof glass replaced for free cause of a safety recall.
I want one too Charlie! The ONE OPTION my car doesn't have!
And I cringe at the thought of cutting a hole in my roof!
But I want one so bad!

Webasto is the way to go.
Ditto.
Mine has been in there for probably 8 years now? I had it installed. I asked them how they got my sunshade to match my headliner... they smiled and said, "That's not your headliner!"
So my shop replaced the headliner to make everything match. Sweet!
Call the local Lincon dealership and ask who they used to put sunroofs in GM's and Town Cars... you'll be on the right track.
I really like mine and I'd spend the $ again in a heartbeat.

Something I hope to achieve soon. 😞
Too easy to spend the money elsewhere. Don't give a hoot about the roof.

I don't get the attraction to sunroofs or moon roofs. They will all eventually leak, create wind noise and when the Sun shines in they allow you to be blinded.
You have 4 windows for venting warm air or if it's that hot, AC
If you really want wind in your hair buy a convertible. JMHO

The factory moonroofs don't make noise and there is a shade between the glass and headliner to keep the sun out.
Ride in a marauder that has one and you will see what I mean.
And as far as leaking. The members here that do have them I have never heard of them complaining about leaks.

In all my years on the site I can't remember 1 time seeing a member complaining about the FACTORY MOONROOF leaking or being noisy at high speeds.
Because it was done the right way.
And on a personal note. If I had one the last thing I would be worried about is leaks since my car is garage kept and not a daily driver.

I can remember 2 members having problems. One was a water leak, probably was the drains being clogged and one was something to do with the operation of the roof itself.
For the most part, factory installed moonroofs are trouble free. All my cars have 2 must have factory options.... leather interiors and a moonroof.

Had the ASC moonroof put in the week after I bought the car brand new. No problems or issues with it. I had one in my 96 olds and loved it so much I put one in my MM.
Bought my DTR with the Ford Moonroof and was very disappointed in it. It did not have all the features that my ASC has -can set it to shut when the car is turned off, more positions, etc.
Make sure you have a reputable dealer do it and you should be okay. Guspech you should look at ASC as they are up by you in the nothern suburbs. I believe I paid around $1100. Was not cheap but the quality is there.

Like I said, mine is aftermarket but it does not leak at all. It does have many programmable options like closing when the key is turned off. It also has a sunshade.

Moonroof yes, sunroof no - I like the Moon better. I always thought those pop up sunroofs were chinsey! Glad my next question of how much has been answered!

Couldn't agree more.
I've owned several vehicles with moonroofs and most had too much wind noise.
Plus, after the first few months I hardly ever used the moonroofs.
TOTAL waste of money IMHO.
Plus, my Dad always said: "Why would you go and cut a hole in a perfectly good metal roof!??"
Buy a convertible....or a Cobra.....:D

Webasto provided the moonroofs in the cars originally, that info was straight from Crown North America.
Have factory roofs in the MM and Grand Marq., had a aftermarket in the LX Sport, the aftermarket closes when it looses ignition power, and physically looks OEM,as opposed to the OEM, that looks aftermarket.
Worst case, buy a roof clip from a wreck, and install it on your car, it's easier than it sounds.

Well if your thinking of a moonroof remember that you loose headroom after it is installed. When you 6'6" it is an issue:)

I have a factory installed sun roof with no wind noise, leakage,or mechanical issues. I use it all the time and would really miss it if it were not there. The only issue I'm having is the paint developing spider like cracks around the edge of the molding .Anyone else experiencing this paint issue

I have to put my finger on the deflector to stop the vibration, or wedge a rag under it.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, but my main motivation is the lack of head room, there is atleast 2 1/2" less in my DBP than my black MM
