You will need 3 quarts.

75w140

Motorcraft brand, you will need to add a bottle of friction modifier
Mobil 1 LS, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Redline or Lucas Synthetic don't need the friction modifier as long as it's the correct weight listed above.

75-90w for stock
75-140
85-140 for heavy duty use
Motorcraft, Amsoil, RP, Redline, Mobil 1...
Make sure if you use a brand that does not contain friction modifier that you add that. I believe it's 4 oz.

Ford recommends 75w140 weight. Friction modifier is in most synthetic fluids.

BTW... Ford changed the 75w90 spec to 75w140 after the soft axle issue.

It only takes 2 quarts, not 3.

It only takes 2 quarts, not 3.
Most MM's have taken 2.2 to 2.5 quarts with a stock cover so since they don't sell quarter or half quarts of gear oil then you buy 3 and have a little left over.

An aftermarket cover does not increase the capacity that much more, when I had my 4.10s put in it took 2.75 quarts.

Also if changing the gears by using a jack and jack stands with just the rear up in the air then it will seem less than 2.5 quarts as the fill plug is titled forward.

I've changed mine twice and it is spilling over a little before I get the second quart in, a little bit left over. Car was jacked up only a little to squeeze in there. I removed the cover each time so there was no fluid trapped. Plus the owner's manual says 2 liters, so not sure why yours takes so much. 2.2 I can see, and makes sense, but not 2.75.

I dunno Tom?

Mine took over 2 quarts as well when I had my 410's installed.

There is nothing funny about a "how much oil can your rear end hold before it overflows" thread.
Actually, I was interested in the correct answer. I don't recall any past debates on this. How could people get different results? Bigger 'pumpkins' from the factory than some folks? After market pumpkin cover?

A question for the Oracle.....

More gear teeth means more fluid displacement. [(b) - (a)] = Volume of object causing displacement.

P.S. Just kidding! Maybe there's extra metal in some of the castings vs. others! I dunno!!!

Never said you were, factory service manual calls for 1.8 Liters/3.75 pints. I've got a TA Performance gridle cover and use the gridle fill plug but take out the factory fill plug and pump the gear oil in until it starts to come out the factory fill plug and then I know mine is filled.

Hi

....and pump the gear oil in until it starts to come out the factory fill plug and then I know mine is filled.

If oil is flowing out the fill plug then the axle is overfilled, the oil level should be 1/4 - 9/16 inch below the level of the fill plug.

Regards

Dereck

Didn't imply that you were implying that I implied that you were implying......oh nevermind.

1.8 liters = roughly 1.908 quarts, so not sure where you're going here. I agree on your method and I also have the Ford Racing girdle.
