View Full Version : MSD Coils - Wrong ones?

I ordered some MSD Coils off Amazon last week. When I opened the box and looked at them, I noticed the insert said they are for Ford Modular SOHC, '99-'04, 4.6/5.4, part number 82428 (pic below).
On MSD's website, there are coils available that say specifically for DOHC 4.6, number 82448. http://www.msdignition.com/product.aspx?id=14310&terms=82448

Will the ones I bought work on our DOHC, or do I need to return them? :mad2:

Those are for SOHC only, will not work on our cars. You will have to get the ones specifically for a DOHC.

Return those and buy Joe's (TripleThreat). He has some lightly used MSD DOHC coils in the parts for sale section. I saw them run up to 7k rpm personally on the dyno.

Yeah I'd stay away from MSD as well. Stock Motorcraft coils work just fine. Just upgrade the plugs and the coil connector.

Stock Motorcraft coils work just fine.Agreed.

Unless you have a mega-motor with enormous boost...

I called MSD to check fitment. They say the only difference in SOHC and DOHC coils is that SOHC coils are straight and DOHC coils are angled. For some reason he wouldn't verify that one would fit and the other wouldn't. The only difference is that one is angled and one is straight.

Well go right ahead on and try jamming one in place. Lemme know if you can get your coil cover back over them.

So you guys don't like MSD? My only concern with going motorcraft is I won't know if they're pink or black top until I get the. I've heard sparta has them... Can anyone post a link to the right ones?

www.spartaperformance.com (http://www.spartaperformance.com) he has a set of motorcraft that will work. Send the MSD back they are the wrong ones, ours are straight.

lol that made me laugh pretty hard for some reason

another reason these will not work is bec they need to be bolted our DO NOT

I would say the first set

Second set is the wrong years

Third set is for the 3V motors

If those are from Sparta's website, why don't you just PM or call Tommy?

The middle one.

While you are at it pick these up as well

It won't hurt.

Guess which one is OEM?

I have a misfire between 3rd and 4th that I'm trying to get rid of before I tune it, so whatever will get the job done!

The GMS coil connectors help smooth out idle and I noticed a mid-range rpm pickup increase. These would be top notch spark plug wires IF our cars actually used wires.

Makes changing plugs easier also, the factory coil connector can easily bend out of shape if you're not careful with it.

Well as soon as i verify with Sparta I'm buying the right coils I'll place my order. Raven would you say I should do both coils and connectors prior to tuning?

Also having a bit of an issue with my fan not coming on, at first it was coming only with a/c on (but not when engine got hot with a/c off). Ordered a new cylinder head temp sensor replacing tomorrow, but this is starting to worry me as the fan doesn't come on at all, even with coolant temp sensor unplugged...?

The 03 Mustang Mach 1 MSD work just fine on the Marauder.

Could do it before or after. Doing it before might help get better numbers when getting tuned.

I don't know about you guys but I'm loving my MSD cop kit. Best 400 dollars I've ever spent on my MM. Wouldn't trade it for no factory Motorcraft garabage cop's that everyone in here by their mother swears by.

If you haven't owned a set of MSD's then your opinion is highly invalid and false. I would rather trust my MSD's then your FORD MOTORCRAFT garbage anytime of week. I'm just stating the facts.

I threw my oem cop's straight in the trash cause thats were they belong.
If every MARAUDER owner had em they know damn well they'd happy with em.

I have had the pink tops for over two years without a single hiccup.

You can call your opinion "facts" but the FACT is that Mary's car has the ORIGINAL COPS with 165,xxx miles and I've only had to replace ONE. Doesn't sound like "garbage" to me. I'm sure MSD COPS are very high quality, but don't spew your obviously biased hate as "fact".

Any ignition coil can (and will) go bad. I replaced the failing OEM's in my 2V Crown Vic with Accel's, and wouldn't hesitate to replace OEM's with more OEM/Motorcraft, Accel, or MSD in my MM. I will let price be my guide, when the time comes.

I find the idea that ...

"The GMS coil connectors help smooth out idle and I noticed a mid-range rpm pickup increase"

... a rather seat-of-the-pants analysis, without merit. I prefer to think Ford would have upgraded the connectors if a performance increase was available - especially after building (hundreds of?) thousands of Modular engines.
