I didn't notice any posts about it but does anyone have problems with the factory wheels flaking? Seems like the clear coat in the corners of the spokes in a few spots is coming off. Is this common? Is there anyway to fix it or does it need to be completely refinished? I'm thinking maybe strip it all off and recoat is needed.

The car never really seen salt/snow (at least since 06 I know) but was occasionally driven in rain.

Thanks!

Are the fronts worse than the rears?

That's how mine are, backs look awesome but the fronts a little on the rough side

They can be stripped, polished and re-cleared, it is not a cheap process, as the etching primer used for this is quite expensive. The clear used is a standard acrylic urethane though, but these days, even it is pricey. I did several wheels I had, materials were $500 or close to it.

Without the etching primer, nothing will stick to the polished surface.

I had my MM rims re-finished this last summer by Blackburn in Macedonia, OH. They glass beaded, polished and powder coated clear not spray clear. Are they like brand new?..no..can still see buffer marks in the right light, sort of hazy but they are far better than before, oxidation, peeling all gone...cost $200+ each approx. 7 day turn around.

If I were doing another set, I would probably go the route of powder coating them clear or chrome. I did consider chroming a set, no one here local does it, they would have all needed shipped, and shipping for all 4 was $200 each way, it was just as easy to strip and re-polish at that point.

OP, if you can find a shop that will powder coat after polishing, that would be more durable than clear coat.

How many wheels were you able to do for the $500 in materials?

They would turn to crap rather quickly.

If mine ever started going I would strip them and just polish them up.
The best looking alloys I have had were polished only,
Pros: easy to clean up when stuff happens, just break out the flitz and rub em out
Cons: Be prepared to polish them, a lot.
If a dog or cat decides to mark it's turf on them it will leave a mark that will have to be addressed right then or there will be lots of polish involved to cut past the etching caused by that stuff.

If you strip them, polish them and then just let them go, they will look like crap in no time.
