Has anyone blacked-out in paint the merc symbol in front and back lid ---yet to see how it would look ....seems it might be better with out that shinny symbol in the middle of all that black--I have been thinking of doing it--will tape of over this weeekend in black tape to see how it looks--..any comments--
Can you not remove those emblems with some effort completely?

You can remove the emblems and scuff sand and paint with a paint called Black Satin, don't remember who makes it but think it was Martin Senior ( I'm sure i spelled that wrong) and can also tape up the window molding's to paint that chrome also. Sand with at least 240 first then 360 it before painting. The window molding's first try a rough scuff pad, if it doesn't bite in enough then sand also. No need to prime with the Black Satin.
Problem with removing the grille emblem is the grille is molded to accept the emblem.

Not looking to remove the emblem, cause like you say--it's molded into the grille and so forth--just to darken it or make it black -like the car.....don't want to go thru all the trouble of painting and sanding it's removal....
So..Anyone painted them as yet--and if so with what and waht are your results....

Marauderman,
I believe hd2805 said he blacked out his front emblem. Said it made the front look wider. Don't think he said what he did it with.

I painted the emblems, was going to remove but the front one had a flat mounting disc behind it so painted it (hi-gloss black Harley touch up) makes the car look lower and wider for sure... The one on the trunk I could not find a easy way to remove so just masked it off and did the same, looks good but not as good as front.... Want to do the door mouldings also but car is put away for winter now...Powder coating would have been the answer but can't do plastic...Good luck, Happy holidays...

Did this with Photoshop a while back and forgot to post it. To me it makes the car look like a Buick Regal. I think I'll leave mine chrome.

Mikeenh -
Thanks for pointing out hd2805 has having painted the emblem in the past--thought it had been done befoe---and to
hd2805 -
for providing the details of your accomplishments--gosh--it seems like alot of work---must look good though!
Racerx88-
Well now--What can be said --the pic (photoshop) we were looking for--- thanks for not losing the pic to post--looks smooth ---I like it and yeah--I see where you can get that it may resemble the Buick Regal--But the Buick isn't like the MM ---as we all know----yet I will still ponder on this "cover up" project -will have to keep looking at the pic alot longer to see if it settles in as a winner or ..
Again --Thanks all for your replies---Happy Holidays to All

By my calculations, removing the MM logo on the front grill makes your MM look like my 03 CV Sport (black)..not that I think that looks bad or anything, but the emblem gives the MM identity...would perfer the gods head emblem, but that is just me...

When the weather is warmer I will use a clear primer on the trunk medallion, then use a glossy black paint to black it out. I have several months to find the right pain to use and am sure I will find something suitable.

I had my badges "black chromed" at a local customizing shop. They do a lot of "gold chrome" but had to special order the product to do the black chrome. I think it is esentially like electroplating. It is done on the car, they just mask off the surronding area. I am not 100% pleased with it. The finish is not glossy, it looks like an overheated motorcyle exhuast header, dark but with some "blueing" effect to it (kind of a smeary rainbow over the black). I would preffer a finish that matches the grill, but that is not how it came out. They said they did a trial run on another badge they had laying around the show to see how the product worked and it came out much better (they had never done the black chrome before). The test badge was real metal though, as opposed to chromed plastic like ours. They said it took many coats to get it as black as it is (still not black enough), while the real metal only took a couple of coats and came out much better. I may look into having it painted later, but for now at least it is toned down. I personally think the car should be totally dechromed. I'd love to get rid of the chrome window trim. The customizing shop tried the black-out tape on the window trim, but they said it looked really bad so they took it back off. They said I should talk to someone that does vinyl graphics because the thinner product they use would lay down on the window trim better than their black out tape.
Hope someone else finds a better solution I can copy!

Found a new wrinkle... :D
The back badge is more ar less hidden under the MM spoiler, so I will leave it as is ( if I were to cover I might use thin glossy blk. outdoor vinyl sign tape form a sign shop and cut fit with a Xacto Knife ) and I will put glossy vertical stripe tape on the front badge to match the grill work just to give it a different look.
However I found the mfg. Reproductions by Dennis Carpenter800-4769653 ( in the Quicksilver Mag. ie. MercuryCulb) of the 1955 Mercury Marauder badge, 2 1/4" in dia., chrome edge, 1/4" thick, red background and a fine chrome Mercury Head in the middle. I will put this to the Rt. of the trunk key hole and could put 1 on each lower ft. fender just to give my 03MM a diiff. look ( will use 3M blk. Auto Attachment Tape from auto body supply store to stick it on ) and perhaps to celebrate the Hi. Po. parts from Dennis Reinhart that it has. :)

its an experiment but, i just blacked out my emblems. i used krylon fusion black gloss. its made for painting over plastic with no prep, just a little cleaning before spraying. i did it on 11/13/04. i have to let it sit for a week of paint cureing before i install it back on. i'll put it to the test with the winter comming up. :burnout:

:D Hey guy's & Gals,
Wow another thread dug out of the archives.I did that today too;) Great Ideas and Pics. I like the look of the Marauder with a custom badge(Identity)& Badgeless.I opted to do Soul Riots mod on the Badge (no paint)Very happy with the results. I took off the existing badge and I would like to start a little contest AKA "the Polkster"If you can guess what fun thing I got to do today I will ship the winner first to post the correct answer this rear Badge.

When I had my front badge, I painted it using some gloss black appliance paint I found at Home Depot. Didn't come out glossy. Not matte, though either--there's a picture in the gallery somewhere (I'll post link later). I was pleased with how it looked, but I was also looking initially to "black chrome" my badge, but I couldn't find anyone who knew what I was talking about. The badge definitely would look better if it was black AND had some reflectance to it. Still I liked how the badge looked and the paint stayed pristine for several thousand miles until I ordered a custom badgeless grille from a member here named Zack (who I believe said, he is no longer making them).
Regarding the rear badge, I think the car looks much better without it. Also, and it's only my opinion, I think it looks even worse with the rear badge AND the factory spoiler in place (too busy).
As for the window trim, follow gdmjoe's excellent instructions--that 3M tape is awesome and hasn't degraded at all after several months of car washes!

Click below for photo. The brand of spray paint I used was Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy, Ultra-Hard Enamel, Gloss Black.
Blacked Badge Photo (http://www.mercurygallery.net/mmnet/showphoto.php/photo/330/size/big/sort/1/cat/500)
Again, not glossy--sort of a satin-finish.
