View Full Version : Slight whine/whistle Inside car

I noticed a new sound when I'm driving. It's a steady whine, not loud but noticable inside the car when I am driving. the whine gets higher as I accelerate almost to a faint whistle. I don't hear it outside when idling. I though it may be some interference from the speakers but it's there when radio is off also. Not really sure where it's coming from. Car is N/A. I tried recording it but cannot hear it to well on the audio.

Any ideas?

Thanks all!

Pete

Could be the beginning of the Idler/Tensioner Pulley problem. Mine started out that way. If so, it will gradually get worse and louder until it fails. Best to have it checked out now and have it replaced.

Loose belt?

Check pulleys, idler, tensioner...I'm guessing one is going bad...You can pull the belt off and then spin each pulley by hand, if it isn't silky smooth, replace it. if it feels like there is sand in it or gritty when spinning it is worn out.

Thanks for the tips, now I have something to do over the weekend.

Jake, it doesn't sound like a loose belt. It sounds more like some electronic interference, like when you're trying to tune one of those old AM radios to a station, sometimes you hear that whistle? Like I said though, I hear it even with the radio turned off.

I have the same problem. A steady whine when at speed coming from outside the car. I hear it when I pass by something to the left like a concrete highway divider.

My Mach 1 spoiler did it. Drove me nuts. Not anymore.

The Mach 1 front spoiler will whistle at speed if there are any small gaps between it and the bottom of the front bumper.

Heard it all. Tried everything. Still whistled.

Haha, my spoiler whistles also but this isn't it. I'll check the pulleys this weekend and try to track it down. This sounds like it's coming from the inside but then again, I'm in RI and not too many drive with windows open round these parts this time of year.

I used to get an occasional vent whistle when the fan was on high. Simple fix was to back off the fan a notch or two or crank up the volume on the radio. ;)

Status update - I have an appointment with the only honest repair shop in town on Thursday. After taking a quick look, he believes it's one of the smaller pulleys on the passenger side of the engine, possibly the tensioner or the 2 right next to it. On Thursday he'll put his stethoscope to work. He does not think it's the alternator bearing, says it wouldn't have a high pitch like it does but would sound lower or louder? We shall see.

Another sound I'm having him check is a knock I hear when I quickly let off the gas pedal. Doesn't matter what speed I'm driving, when I let my foot off the gas quickly, I hear a knock, just one knock from the engine bay. it's been around for a couple of months, doesn't seem to be getting worse.

Thanks for all your help and ideas. I love this forum!!
