Had my oil and filter changed last week and I just noticed that it's above the the little circle where it says DO NOT OVERFILL...any clever tricks for sucking out some of the oil? I really don't want to drain a little out the bottom...:(
For some reason I can see this 3/16" dia. clear hose with a suction ball on the end... oh well just a thought...

Mine seems to burn enuff on its own without having to worry about that, let us know how you get it out.

I have tried to pull some out of the dipstick tube but it must have a restriction at the bottom and a tube will not reach the oil!!:argue:
Just crack the drain plug and let it run past the treads a few seconds and check it!!

I believe Zack investigated this some time ago and determined that it would take over 7 quarts to even begin to get close the crank. I wouldn't worry too much about it. With mod motors it's better to be over than under.

I have put 6.5 quarts in before and my motor is still going. lol
Did you check the oil when the engine was cold or after it ran and sat for 10-15 mins?

I remember seeing a video where the guy poured 10 quarts in the pan off the car to fill the pan to the top. ,our crankshafts sit above the edge of the oil pan .I run 7 quarts in my car no problem.

You can pull the filter off and drain it. That may be a little easier and less messy then pulling the plug.

How in the world can removing the filter be LESS MESSY???

Not while the engine is running! If its a cold engine, you can remove it and pour out maybe a 1/4 of a quart of oil from it and since it sits above the pan, you won't have all the oil run out.
I guess it's less messy for me since I'm using a oil deflector.

I figgered ya meant without it running...duh!!:cool4:
On a cold engine I have simply backed the drain plug out until it's free of the pan and lower it slightly to allow a small amount of oil to run out then screw it back in and check the level!!
Not as messy as my filter removal but I don't have the deflector!!:shake:
As mentioned before half a quart too much won't hurt a thing!!

The dip stick is an indicator and not an exact scientific measurement.
You can run the oil a little high or a little low and still be fine.
I owned a 1970 ranchero with a 302 (5.0 liter). If you added more oil to the dip stick level, it would consistantly burn off 1/2 quart.
I now believe the factory put the wrong dip stick in the engine, maybe from a 351.
Solution was to leave the dipstick alone at 1/2 quart low.

I agree Jim...
Thanks for everyone's input and the usual varied opinions...
I've got to figure that when I see the guy pour in one 5 quart jug and then add one more quart to that... I must have 6 quarts... so I think all's well...:D
Thanks again, Architect

Wait, you brought it somewhere? Bring it back and demand they fix their mistake!

A deflector for the oil filter??? Where do I get this animal since I changed the oil for the first time and it took forever to cleanup the oil from the filter>
