This week for work we've been swapping the turbo out of an SD-40-2. Today we finally got it removed!

Thought someone on here might find it interesting considering all the eaton and trilogy talk.

The crane guy's scale weighed it in at a lil under 2,000 lbs. Kinda puts our cars in a little different perspective eh? :)

That would deffenanty lower the front of my car down where I want it. But I don't think I could get the hood to shut. I'll just wait for the twin turbo kit to come out.

I don't know if our cars could even turn the damned thing. LOL

Thanks for the great photos. SD40-2 is a favorite
of mine. Love to hear the turbo working with a
heavy load going up hill. Is that an ex-BNSF unit?

Gotta Love It!

It was extremely eerie being underneath it while it made its way through the roof of the damn thing...makes ya feel pretty human!

Yup its an ex bnsf unit, it will spend the rest of its operable life at a little co-op in MN.

645 cubic inches for EACH cylinder too! Pinch points become amputations :)

When you get a chance could you PM me some info on how to get into a line of work like that? I was an auto mechanic before I joined the Navy and have been working on F/A-18s for 3 years now but don't consider it a career. I'm looking at getting out in a couple years when my time is up and would like some options on careers for when that happens and this is one that always interested me. Thanks :o

Sweet! I had to research trains for this round of classes I'm taking. Part of the whole transportation/logistics stuff.

Don't forget to return the old turbo so you can get your core deposit back.

Cool pictures!

:hmmm:

I wonder how big the BOOST Gauge is up in the cab?

In automotive speak, I always thought that a gear driven unit was a supercharger and an exhaust driven unit was a turbocharger...?

The co-op is going to send it in as a rebuild to save some major dough

It's both, its gear driven until the exhaust has enough mmph to get 'er goin
