The motor on the MM started a knocking sound the other day. It has 99354 miles on it. Ive done the regular maintenance on schedule all the time for the past 4 years of ownership. Am I making too big of an assumption that the motor is on its way out? Could it be something else?:shake:

Could it be bad gas? Run some techron through it, and fill her up with about 5 gal of 93oct

Running rough? Maybe a tensioner collapsed and you are hearing the timing chain slapping. Have you isolated it to what part of the engine it's coming from?

Theres no loss of power. She still runs smooth. I just replaced the tensioner a month ago. Sounds like the knocking is coming from the bottom of the motor. Possible bad cat? Hate to admit it but i pretty much baby this car and i very rarely drive it hard as its my DD and being without it will be an extreme hardship.

Mary's car has had a soft "nuk-nuk-nuk" sound off and on for the last 6 years and 80,000 miles (has 165,xxx now). I thought rod-knock at first, too, but it's never gotten any worse. Seems to happen randomly...

sorry to hear.
i suggest take it to your trusted mechanic. can't tell you how much time and money i've wasted trying to decipher and do word of mouth trouble shooting.
there's a reason i do what i do and they do what they do.
although if it wasn't my daily driver i would throw in some 93 and pounce on it a few times. i kind of have the hit it with a hammer mentality. make sure you do it in the direction of your mechanic, you'll save a few bucks on the tow :)

Speaking of gas...how bad is it if you don't run 93 oct in the car but use the nexrt grade down? Speaking hypothetically of course...

I have a tune for 91 oct. Mine has always ran great up until a few days ago.

You can re-tune for lower octane fuel, but running it without retarding the spark can be risky.
4V motor + spark knock = BOOM.

At my last oil change the oil was low. The knock started a few days after the last oil change.

more and more I see these engines begin to knock at around 100,000 or before, starts with a rattle at start-up then gets worse. Ask me how I know

I ran 88 octane religiously for about 40k, started to do mods and now do 91(no 93 close to me)
I'm at 147ish and she is running fine.
A friend with an expedition just replaced his motor because of a knock only to find out later and way too late that it was a bad timing chain tensioner. Not saying that's your problem but it's well worth the $$$ to spend a few extra bucks on a good ford dealer or credible shop diagnosis. Good luck with it.
