I just bought my used '03 MM over the weekend. What a ride! :P
Only one bummer: the hot weather brought out cigarette smoke odor the previous owner must have wanted to share with me. A web search shows lots of products that advertise to remove the odor, not just mask it. Has anyone used something that really worked?

Try an good auto detailer and see if he will sell you a candle. They make them for odor problems:)

What works is fresh air and time. Find an air freshener you like for when the car is closed, and open the windows whenever possible. Detailing also works, but it's very very difficult to eliminate a strong odor with one expensive visit. I have removed smoke odors from 3 cars now, and what works best for me is sunshine, fresh air, and driving down open roads a lot when it's nice out.
If ya bought it from a dealer, doncha love how the odor was not there until you got it home? I don't know how they do that, but it's happened to me twice. :depress:
Good luck,
-A

I smoke in My Marauder  But, you'd never know it. It still smells new. About every other week or so, I use Zaino leather cleaner. Non-smokers (including my wife) can't tell it's been smoked in.

Febreeze is great! Spray it on the carpets and headliner and you'll notice the diff instantly. Then get a YANKEE CANDLE brand CAR JAR "leather" fragrance air freshener. Don't put it inside the car or it will overpower you and you'll find yourself hungry for beef all the time. Put it under the hood in the interior air intake. i had the same problem in a used car I bought. You can get those air fresheners at any Hallmark store.

Another help is to put a couple of those fabric softener strips you put in the dryer different places in the car. They absorb some odor. I used them in my previous car. In Alabama it is the warm damp weather that really brings out the smoke odor.

Rent , borrow, or buy a bissel carpet cleaner with small attachments....and prepare to trash the interior:up: , they also haver appropriate soap and oder remover available.
You will need to clean the headliner, which is the number one absorber of smoke odors, and the carpeting. Once finished wipe down the dash and leather, and let that sucker air out foe awhile as mentioned above.
It's not as difficult as one might think, and can make for an enjoyable afternoon with right loud music and cold beer.
EDIT: How about editing your profile to indicate a location, even if not just a state? If we knew where you were at you might get volunteered help.

I used to smoke cheap little cigars in the MM (Colts Mild, for any Canucks reading). Now that I am smelling better (in and out) ;), I've noticed that the car has recovered by itself. Doesn't smell like my cigars.

Open a small box of Arm & Hammer baking soda under the seat. If you're not prone to driving 90 mph with the windows down you could even dump it out on the rug.
Vacuum it out once every two weeks and repeat until the smells gone.
Costs about a dollar each time. http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/images/icons/icon6.gif

If you really want to REMOVE the odor from your car go to a high end detailing shop and have them run an OZONE GENERATOR in your car for about 30 minutes. It will destroy the odors in your car, not just cover them up.

drgnrdr33,
Home Depot and other stores carry ZEP products which include an aerosol can called Smoke Eliminator. Some of the Hotels/motels use it. If you use it, spray in the air and on the carpets; let stand for about 1 hour in SHADE, not sun; then open all the windows and go for a long drive at 45 MPH. That should cure most of the odor problems.

drgnrdr33 - Welcome aboard. I would agree that fresh air will rid the smoke smell. Although there are many commercial products that can be used. Enjoy your new ride. :)

Febreeze is great!
Afraid I am gonna hate to vote for Fabreeze too. Even though it won't kill the smell in old police cars, it does a pretty good job on smoke.

Fabreeze works good on smoke odor and helps get the perfume smell out of clothes after a trip to a SC.

My wife sells a product called Bio-deoderizer. It does not cover or mask smells. It contains enzymes that actually eat at the things that cause odors. It is excellent for pet and kid accidents. It can be used on nearly any surface. I use it in my car and it does a great job and smells wonderful. A 32 oz. container with sprayer is $14.25 If interested pm me or e-mail me at bogntuck@optonline.net

Both.
The rear seat pays much better though.

If the previous owner was a heavy smoker you are going to have to clean carpets, headliner and any other permeable material in the car. Also clean out heating/defrost ductwork and the heat, AC core/coils as these areas tend to have residue settle on them and will always carry the smell of the smoke unless actually cleaned.

Thanks for all the advice. I tried FeBreeze + fresh air first since it seems to be the most readily available. I used the "Auto" flavor = less scent so the MM does not smell like a potporrui shop for too long. Initial results are good :P . Now to see if it will last.

A final note.
I waited a week after the first Febreze treatment. Smoke odor was reduced by about 1/2. The carpet and headliner did not smell of smoke but when the car was opened up after sitting a while you would still smell it. I got another bottle of FeBreeze and shot all the fabric & carpet again. I then cleaned all the windows, doors and other vinyl & plastic surfaces. I used Meguires Leather cleaner on the seats. Lots of grey stuff came off these smooth surfaces.
Another week went by and there was just a slight hint of odor left. More smell testing and the only smoke odor I could find was coming from the leather seats. I cleaned the seats again and then used Zaino leather conditioner (Z10). The Zaino leather smell has faded no and the smoke odor is complete gone.
Why so picky? Remember, California is a smoke free, gun free, socialist state. The only way we can enjoy these things is to live vicariously through the movies of our govenator. If they have their way, the wackos in Sacramento would make us meltdown our SUVs and Marauders into environmentally friendly free housing for the suffering illegals.
About the only thing you can do here is marry a dog, a couple of pigs, or whatever else the pet store has on sale. I'm sure some state official somewhere would go for it.

I am a smoker; but have consciously decided not to smoke in my Marauder. At first it was a little difficult. Now after more than 6 months, I hardly even notice it anymore. How do you think the IRS would feel if I tried to write off my Blue baby as a health cost?

I can vouch for the ZEP Smoke Eliminator, I had a chimney fire 2 years ago, the ZEP spray did an amazing job of getting rid of the stink....:bounce:

DON'T LAUGH !, but after being in the car business for 13 years - we put an APPLE cut up in to 1/4s on a plate which absorbs the odors in the used cars then put a scented laundry sheet under the seat.
