Yes Install kit is a must. get m-4210-c2 only a bit more comes with new carrier bearings AND seals. Since you're paying labor to have it all removed you may as well replace everything while you are in there

My Bad, the one is M-4210-C3 - That install kit has everything. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Again since you are changing the gears get the complete kit.

Also the first 3 heat cycles are critical. Put in regular dinosaur gear oil when the gears go in. Drive for 10 minutes gently, stop and let cool for 30. (after the first 10 mins the rear cover will be hot enough to burn your hand) Do that process a total of 3 times. Then drive for 400 miles or so taking it easy. The gears will then be broken in correctly and will be quiet and last you a long time.

Then drain it out, fill with a good synthetic 75w-140 and stand on it.

Sparta also has nice FRPP rear diff covers. I'd get this too.

It makes changing the gear oil easy and will increase ring life.

Definitely change all the bearing, seals, etc. while in there. Cheap insurance.

Follow the manufacturers / installers recommendation for breaking in the gears. IMHO... no need to use dino oil first. Use a good quality synthetic oil (you won;t need to add any friction modifier), I like Redline 75w 140, which is the recommended weight per Ford. After I had my gears installed the installer said to drive it normally for the first 300 miles, change the fluid, then your good to go.

Remember..... Make sure there is no noise or clunking after the install. If there is the gears where not installed correctly and you will always have the noise or clunking. It will never get better and will certainly get worse.

Spend the extra coin on the new rear end cover. It will increase the capacity which will dissipate more heat.

For those of you that have switched over to 4.10 gears, what has been the change in MPG from the OEM 3.55s?

You'll lose about a mile per gallon, 2 at most.

Correct. You be running at about 100 - 200 higher RPM at speed.

Thank you for the input on MPG of 3.55 vs 4.10!

How often do you have to buy new tires?

Gas goes fast past 2500 rpm, Mileage is funny like that. Depends on how fast you drive. With 3.73 (what I have) at 80mph I'm spinning 2500rpm. Just drove across county (3,200 miles) at 80-85 and got about 22mpg. With 4.10's you'd be closer to 2900rpm.

You can get decent mpg with 4.10's - just not at 80-85mph, also I'd suggest a better driveshaft and/or force tailshaft lube if you drive it highway a lot.

Recently, on a little road trip, I had it on cuise at 80 and 85.

At 85, with 410's, my RPM was dead-nuts at 3k RPM.

:D

At 80, RPM is about 2,800

Awesome, Barry! I put a set on my rotisserie cooker. Takes half the time now roasting chicken and pork loins. The increased torque now lets me spin turkeys upwards of 15 lbs, too.

Don't forget that you will need a tune once you swap the gears to calibrate the speedo and trans schedule.
