View Full Version : Pulling the Valve Covers

I want to pull the drivers' side valve cover for no other reason than to take a peek at everything to see if there is any sludge and/or how clean it is, and because I'm just interested in seeing the inner workings of my engine..... No leaks or anything.

My question is, if I do this, can I just put it all back together with the original rubber gasket and O-rings, or will they get torn from pulling it apart? I can get a Fel-Pro set at work for only $36, so cost is not an issue.

I have 0 experience with this, but have always been told to replace gaskets vs. re-use..... If the pro's chime in and say otherwise I won't be offended.:)

Often thought of getting it done myself..... Was thinking I wanted powdercoated valve covers a while back, but got over that cosmetic hurdle quickly, when my circumstances changed....:o

You can reuse Tom, but with higher mileage and the fact them gaskets are 10 years old, I wouldn't even contemplate reusing them anymore. Don't forget the black RTV where the front cover meets the head in two spots. $36.00 is a hell of good price! I just paid high $40's with my account! High quality though, Felpro is the way to go.

I would suggest changing them especially after never pulling one off since new. Like was mentioned, add a little dab of silicone to the seams and add some silicone to the bottom rubber rings so they stay in place when replacing the cover.

Great info and timely too...even though my DTR has only 23,000, I have thought about taking one off just to check out how things look ...

Thank you so much for this! Yes I posted on your site too.

My question is what bung needs to be gridded off? The upper left?

There is a piece inside the cover that needs to be ground down.

If your not going to take the cover off again there is no need to grind anything down.

Oh. I thought this just made it easier to put back on. I guess I misread it.

Thanks.

I need to change my O rings. Now I know why I kept finding oil on my plugs. What is this kit called? valve cover kit? Are O rings a part of the package?

Grinding down the bung does make installation much easier. It lessens the angle needed to get the rear of the cover over the rear of the cams. If you are looking at the bottom of the cover in reference to reinstallation, the bung is in the lower left hand corner.

That would make sense since it's closest to the housing that causes it to be hard to get off.

I picked up the Fel-Pro set yesterday and it includes the o-rings Dom.

Cool Tommy. Keep me posted on how easily you can do this.
