View Full Version : Torque Converter Tune
Hey guys simple question.
When you put in a aftermarket torque converter do you need to retune the car?

I don't think so. Your shift points would still be the same, it's just that more energy is transferred due to a more efficient tc.

Dont do it DOOM, that Trilogy make alot down low and will give ya traction issues on the street..........other may disagree......
but to answer your question....in most cases no.......

In a under powered NA car I would say yes if it is a high stall being installed.
If the car has a lot of power then I would say no.

Looks like I'll need a retune. Is dyno needed for NA?
Sorry to hijack.

For drive ability you might need to adjust the shift points depending how big of a stall you go with.

When I got my 3500 stall my car was super dogish off the line and even mid-range with 3.55 gears. Got a tune from DR, ended up being slower and was honestly ready to sell my car. Zack helped me out and got me squared away. With the 3500 stall, his tune and 26" drag radials I knocked just over a half of a second off my 1/4 mile time and could daily drive the car with a little more throttle input off the line.
If you have 4.10 gears you should be alright, 3.55 gears may require some adjustment depending on the stall speed.

Some tuners like to leave the car in each gear until the RPMs go above the stall speed even under light throttle, but it should not be "required". Personally when I had the high stall in my t-bird, I liked leaving the shift points a little lower. The shifts tended to be a little harsh at light throttle if I let the RPMs go up to where the tune was originally set. I backed them down myself and was very pleased with the results.
The only reason I could see to need a re-tune is if the tc lock up points need to be changed. Otherwise I would leave it alone personally.
Thanks for the info guys. :D

My tuner told me that a higher stall TC will soften shifts and you would want the lockup schedule tweaked since it works better unlocked during normal driving and locked at highway speeds like a 5th gear.
Sure a higher stall and SC would promote wheel spin, but if you hook up you'll knock a few tenths off your ET.

This is correct! This is why I had to get a retune when I was running 3.55 gears and when the converter locks it does act like a 5th gear.

I have a CircleD 9" single clutch in my Grand Marquis. Yes it required changes to from the factory 11.25" converter to get it dialed in. It was drivable w/o changes, just not ideal.

Are we going to see the Doomobile at a drag strip this year?

Mine required a small bump in idle rpm in gear to keep from stalling when I went to a 9.5" converter. The shift points had to be tweaked as well, especially the 1-2 shift.

I didn't need a retune with a 2800 triple disc. I did however turn the shift pressure all the way up, I think to +20%.
