Hello all! So, leaking down the back end of my oil pan is nice fresh oil... Apparently the rear seal is leaking?
How hard is this to replace? PITA? Can the transmission be removed and the seal replaced without removing the engine?
Let me know please!
Thanks all!!!!
150,407 miles. Drives like new. Looks like new. Will never sell!

Does anyone have any ideas?

Looking at the FSM, it appears that replacing the rear main seal can be done with the engine in the car. It looks fairly simple once the transmission and flex-plate are removed, but the FSM says special installation tools are required. I've never done this on a mod motor, so I can't be more help.

I'll buy the special tool I have no problem with that When I have to do my valve cover gasket change I had to buy a
Disconnect tool that wasn't too expensive

By "mod" motor RF was referring to the fact that a Marauder motor is of the modular or "mod" class of motors.

I'm gonna spray some engine cleaner all under there.... Try and isolate the issue.

Consider using leak detector and a UV pen/tinted glasses. It will lead you to the leak.

I have seen these engines with 200K plus miles on them with no rear seal leaks. WHat does leak is the oil pan gasket, especially towards the back. It runs down and looks like the rear seal. Usually a rear seal leak will cause the oil to be on the inside of the engine/trans seperator plate. Pan seal will have it run down the outside of the pan. Power wash it off under there and take another look, I'll bet it's the pan seal. Manual says the engine has to be lifted out to change it. I think it can be done with the trans out and the engine lifted slightly, but I have not done one.

Which is why I recommended the dye.....

Don't know of an on-line source for a .pdf, the manual is upwards of a 1,000 pages.
There are DVD versions, but IMO, they're a PITA to use.
Best bet is to find a hard copy.
There's one available through these guys for an '04, and the price is rght:

FWIW, that's the source I used, and I paid more than that for mine.

The rear main seal is actually mounted to a plate that bolts to the back of the engine. This plate gets RTV as well. I bought the install tool, you can do it with the trans/flexplate removed as was mentioned. I know some people have not used the tool only to have it leak upon installation. Removing the plate and swapping in a new seal and reinstalling it is not difficult, it's the trans removal and related stuff that is the time consuming part.
BTW the torque spec for the seal plate is 100 lb/in (at least on a Teksid) and there is a torque sequence.

Are you talking about sealing up the rear main seal silicone?

I would put some stop leak in the oil before spending money on a new seal and labor.

I used this and it plugged up a leaky O-ring in my spark plug well that shorted out my spark plug and coil.
Also, 1/3 bottle plugged up a pinion seal leak in my differential.
$20 per bottle.

It will not expand that much since the solution will be greatly diluted in your oil!!;)
What you see in the photo is after soaking the O-ring in 100% seal swelling solution!!

My neighbor claims a cap full of brake fluid (before an oil change) will also swell leaking seals.

Yes it will. Used to put brake fluid on suspension rubbers to see if it fixed and squeaks.
I don't know if a capful would make any difference tho.......
