View Full Version : My Turn?

On my way home tonight at about 5:30pm, traffic was it's normal heavy stop and go self on I-75. I had stopped in the leftmost lane when I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a pickup barreling toward me. I knew he was going to hit me. I looked to my right and the lane was clear. As he hit me, I turned the wheel and just kissed the bumper of the pickup ahead of me.
Looks like I'll need a new left rear quarter, new bumper and cover, taillight, etc. Plus, the check engine light stayed on (fule pump switch cutout: I suspect it is related). Plus, I'll need a new turn siganl lamp assembly (remind me to tell them to move the Silver Star bulb over!) Although I was able to drive the car, I noticed that it is very difficult to disengage the shifter out of park. I can do it but it takes some wiggling.
On my way to Team Collision in Marietta later tomorrow. I cannot believe that people do not watch where they are driving.
I hope to get it back better than new and in a reasonable length of time.
Thanks for listening.

Todd, thanks. I am OK and the car is repairable. I can send you pix if you like or you'll see the car as it goes through the process.

The driver behind me was OK but his passenger hit the windshield and needed stitches (no belt and air bag disabled).
I learned to hold my temper and say nothing a long time ago. Not much can be done at the scene that will result in much good.
I just hope they can make it like it was. Guess I have to drive the 442 and Corvette for a while (on side roads!!)

Good thing it wasn't the 'vette! That temper holding ability would be tested for sure.

Bob- Sorry to hear about this for you---after meeting you, your wife and your MM during last Nov. tune day , it's just sickning like you said---as you know I too saw it coming from the rear---There is a thread on loud horns going around--maybe we need to look into it to alert those idiots so they can "wakeup"!! Good luck on your repairs............Tom

Glad to hear you were not hurt. Hope you get your car fixed as good as new, and remember the rental is on his bill. Take it 4-wheeling. :baaa:

Tom, thanks. I spoke to the other driver this morning. He is very sorry; he's a reverend at his church so I figured I'd get better cooperation if I treate him reasonably...I do want to scream Wake TF UP!! But, I held back.
He was worried about whether he should just pay the ticket or should take a chance on the judge. I told him I really had no idea.
Thinking back, had it been the Escort I used to drive to work, I might not be able to post right now. Thank God for the big Merc.
Anyway, thank you and everyone else....Yes, I hope my body is OK. If not, I may need to give Dr. Reade (greyghost) a call for a back snap!

To answer your question, it's because we have people like these who are allowed to drive.

Sorry to hear about your ride ,but, glad you're ok.
I have a question: Just prior to impact did it seem like everything went into slow motion? I've been in a couple accidents and I experienced this phenomenon every time. A nephew of mine had to do a paper on it in college, seems there is actual medical data relating to this; something to do with a massive release of adrenalin and the psyche's instinct for self preservation.
Just curious.

Yes! It was for me-- just as you describe----a year ago --I saw it coming and then it was like a slow motion effect of knowing what was to be expected from having seen or hear about it over the years --either from TV or other--anyway--your right---..for what it's worth---now--there are at least two of us who for sure have had the sight and feeling......

I'm not sure I can say it was like slow motion. I just remember cranking the wheel to the right and praying, "Please don't hit.....too late!"

Glad your O.K. Team Ford will do a great job on your MM. I cannot believe the other party was not going to pay the ticket. Unreal. I drive #75 on the South side each day and experience the stop and go each morning. I have a habit of pumping my brake lights if I have to stop just to give the drivers behind me an extra warning and leave 20 feet of room in front of me.

My last bang up was 10 years ago, wife and i had just driven 275 miles from Chicago to the north detroit burbs. Travelling thru the light rain in the far rightlane on a 50 mph 4 lane with additional center lane only about 5 miles from our destination this teenager comes screaming out of a Wendy's on the left, crosses crosses 5 lanes of road to get in front of me and STOPS because she dropped her burger. hitting her was inevitable, my wife and I both knew it and it was like I had all the time in the world to brace for impact, work the brakes, assess my options for lane switching and finally actually had the time to put my right arm out across my wives front shoulders. this all happened in about 1.5 seconds but seemed like 1.5 minutes. Fortunately no one was hurt and i had a few witnesses wait for the leos and confirm my story. The girl lost her license for 3 yrs. Wife just had the same time slipping experience last year when a 6 car pile up was occuring in front of her. It's weird.

I was over at Team this afternoon. They've already ordered the parts and will begin when the parts start to arrive. I had to bring the CD player home and take it apart in order to remove the magazine. So, now I have a second magazine.
Was that your car I saw gleaming in the sunlight just outside the shop?
Bob
Bob...I stopped by Team today...they are already deep into getting you back on the road. Ya know, Brian (halucin8) and I gave them (unfortunately) some practice for yours...Tom says you'll be "good/better than new" in 3 weeks...that's MUCH sooner than my 7 weeks. She looks like you REALLY took a lick...but I know Mike will get it back together.

Thanks, I have been observing the progress the whole time. I had Gary do some extra work for me to make sure everything was just right. Now, if only Scott can figure out why my turn signals don't work, I'll be all set!!
And, then I can bring it to the next breakfast.

Better than new works for me. I ordered a spoiler which will be painted and installed in about two weeks.
I used some of my 'diminished value' money to cover it.

I picked up the car today. It is much, much better than what it looked like when I took it in 4 weeks ago. Now I can spend my days cleaning off the :mad2: pollen!!
Once the pollen season is over, I'll start polishing and waxing again to bring the finish back to the way it was. The paint looks absolutely great, but, I want to make the finish smoother and deeper.
I have a few little details to pick up from the body shop (gas door rubber stops) but that's it. What a difference after having driven a new Monte Carlo for four weeks. I had forgotten about all the luxuries like the steering wheel controls.
Well, as they say, it's great to be back in the saddle again!

Back when I had my Land Rover(especially the Freelander), it was just sickening because in the 150 days I owned it, it spent 85-88 of those days in the repair shop for warranty work. Although i'm going to have my dealer check out this tapping noise i'm getting from the driver side of the engine, it's been a relief that i've not needed warranty work done yet. If I do have a bad set of heads, or something is causing the tapping noise, it's no biggie because any experience is gonna be a relief from the Land Rover days..........
