First time I ha valvoline change my oil because of the weather...this time did it myself and went back to motorcraft. The valvoline oil after was considerably smaller than the motorcraft, but the o ring gaskets were the same size. Never seen that much diff in filters before. Should I b worried that the wrong size was on the car or is it about normal?

You should use the FL820S Motorcraft filter. It has an anti drain back valve. I think there are other aftermarket brands that might have the valve also. I stick with the FL820S. Only a buck or two more.

BTW.... Ford made the FL820S shorter a couple of years ago.

Mobil-1 and K&N filters also have them.

of the three, Motorcraft, Mobil1 and K&N, which is best or are they about the same? I'm used to the ol' push rods, I gots some rethinking on the DOHC thing...

I used fram untill i was told otherwise, FBM, was one of the guys that told me and there are a few websites that have done independent testing and reviews of the filter elements. Motorcraft filters are top notch from reading up on them. Fram is garbage...ill never use fram ever again.

All three of those filters are very high quality, but there are a number of advantages to the Motorcraft:

1) It's recommended and approved by Ford.
2) It has the bypass valve located in the base, where Ford prefers it.
3) It costs significantly less than the others.
4) It's available just about everywhere, including Wally World.

As far as the size difference, most quick-lube places have downsized their inventory and use filters that are engineered to be "one-size-fits-all" or more accurately "one-size-fits-many". The problem is that although the filter may physically fit, it may not be ideal in terms of flow or in the bypass valve setting, which can be important on many cars.

This is what I was worried about.

And this is why I bought a motorcraft filter this time. You guys have had these cars longer than me and I think it would be like playing witht he devil not to listen.;)

Motorcraft oil filters go in everything I own.

I've had the anti drain-back valve come apart in the one time I used a K&N oil filter.

Motorcraft FL820S is tested and proven by hundreds of us, plus it's cheap.

Purolator PureONE filter "PL24651" is made the same parent company that makes the Motorcraft for our car. I've cut it open before and is an exact copy of the FL820S.

Oh wow, yeah the price doesn'y really matter to a point(couple bucks). I'd rather have a good flow for the car and a piece of mind...

I usually get 2 or 3 or filers when I buy however many jugs of Mobil 1 5w-30 Walmart has in stock. Walmart does carry the Motorcraft FL820S filter, even cheaper than at the local autoparts store.

I think the filter was @$4.00 at the AZ. I'll check Wally World on the way home.

I believe Firestone uses a shorter style filter to replace the FL820S.

Fram PH2.

They are great. I don't care what anyone says.

Motorcraft O-Ring gaskets fell off and almost cost me an engine... twice!

It can do that with any oil filter that didn't get a dab of oil on the O-ring and then is tighten too much.

I've changed hundreds of filters and the o-rings have never failed. Proper lubrication is key.

I did it properly. I put 206K on my Marauder and over 100K on my K5. Nothing has been better than Fram to me. I didn't do anything differently with "prep" with a Motorcraft than Fram. Fram stays together. My Motorcraft experience has not been the best. I don't usually let the same dog bite me twice, but I gave it a second chance and got another bite.

Yeah but you run 47 lbs of boost on a Kerosene/91 Octane mixture. That'll blow out your o-ring gasket, your header gaskets, that gasket in your gas cap, even the Mr. Gasket sticker off yer back window. :)

Maybe so, but one time is was upon startup. The second time I drove for a few miles! The in laws called saying I left a lot of oil in their driveway after I changed it. I pulled over to find the car had no oil!

No mo Motorcraft thank you.

We sell 300+ FL820S filters a month...NEVER once had a problem with it or any of our motocraft filters.

One thing that can happen is not get the old oring off and double up on orings, that can be a mess on start up

Knock on wood, I haven't had any filter fall apart. I've used fram for many, many moons with no problem. But I'm always open for suggestions. I don't care which oil filter it is, if it fails in any way it's gone my use.
