View Full Version : I need a LOUD horn

Coincidentally, and it's a bad coincidence, two members report today getting hit by other cars. I almost got hit on the freeway today and it's not the first time: some [insert extremely nasty word augmented by reference to parentage of unknown nature] Mercedes in the next lane tries to change lanes right in to me! The [see above] woman was on her cell phone and oblivious to adjacent traffic. My question is, does anyone know of a LOUD aftermarket horn? I want it to be able to cut through closed windows, air conditioners with the fan on high, stereo turned up to ten and four kids screaming in the back seat. I'm thinking of stealing one off of a Southern Pacific locomotive but that would implicate federal laws and I know those U.S. attorneys have no sense of humor. Any ideas?

you can find all the lud horns you'd like in a J.C. Whitney catalog. They have cruise ship horns, locomotive horns, tractor trailer truck horns, even horns that let you make your own sounds.

Phastphil - have you heard any of those horns? I ask because I have a pair of the Fiamm dual trumpet air horns on my motorcycle, and I frankly doubt that they hit the advertised 134db. They are, however, "ear-piercing," if somewhat high-pitched, sort of like slamming a pig's tail in the barn door.

That's why I see it as a fringe benefit having some loud mufflers like the 18" strait-thru design Magnaflow mufflers. They're nice and loud so everyone around you notices that you are there.

Back when I was driving around my 76 Caddy, I had the same goal.
My dad brought home twin air horns from an International Semi.
I went to the store and bought an 11 gallon air tank.
I then went to the truck supply store and bought an electrically operated air valve solenoid along with 25 feet of air line.
You get the picture, and so did everyone else in my town.

I put the Fiamm on my MM. Yes, they are kinda high pitched, but they do get noticed. Hella makes trumpets horns as well. Go to

http://rallylights.com

They have a good description on various horn types and their sounds. I have ordered from them as well and found them to have a good business practice, even regarding returns.

I was unhappy with my stock horn last year so I installed the horns from a Cadillac. One day I heard a horn that I liked, it was on a mid 80's Coupe De Ville. Don't remember the exact year. I went to the Caddy parts counter and ordered it. It's a nice LOUD two-tone. It installed very easily in about 30 minutes.

I got a 100 watt air horn on my bmw motorcycle. It does the job. Would love to install it into the marauder.

Not only would installing two good horns be ideal, but installing four might be more realistic too. You can install these so they replace what you've got by using the exsiting wiring, or you can use the wiring they come with so you've got 4. That's what I want to do, people are retarted and mine aren't that loud either....

But didn't you know that Mercedes has the right of way built in from the factory?

In addition the the horn, you might try a bumper sticker that says "Would you drive better if that cell phone shoved up your @$$?"

I have never been a fan of the factory horn. It sounds wussy to me on a car of this stature. And the fact that I can barely hear it inside the car really makes me doubt its effectiveness.

Time to do some shopping,

Back in the day, my brother had air horns on his cool, black, Ford extended van (you know, the kind that had a queen-size bed in the back and the Schaefer beer tap thingy for a floor shifter knob). He loved to blast the horns whenever we passed through a tunnel. It became an automatic reflex: see tunnel up ahead, passengers better hold their ears. Since the air horns were probably illegal, he had a toggle switch to the factory horn. The horns came in really handy to wake up sleepy or whatever folks who tried to knock him out of his lane. The P.A. system he had was handy also . . .

Since I was a bit of a copycat, I decided to get an ah-oooo-gah horn for my car at the time (like the old Model T horn). That horn did the trick on many occasions. It was loud and unexpected. You could extend the loud froggy tone by holding down the horn as long as you wanted. It saved me a number of times. Also had a toggle for the factory horn.

Still got that old horn in the garage. Let's see, where could I install it . . .

My question is, does anyone know of a LOUD aftermarket horn?
Yeah, it's called my 45W PA speaker!!!

Seriously though, my PA is very handy for after the fact moron-isms. But JC Whitney is an easy and cheap resourse for what is known as 'Highway Blasters'. Any replacement horn over 160db.

Those twin supertone Hella's, are they a direct replacment for the factory ones ? As in unplug factory and plug in Hella's ? :bandit:

Most replacements are universal, the hard part is re-mounting. With only two wires to deal with, the wiring is the least of the problem.

Do they have one that will play "Dixie" when me and my cousin Luke go airborne while being chased by Sherrif?

Well we have air an suspensions??

So way can't we tap into the air lines to supply air for the air horn?

Next mod?

Myabe you can try enhancing the sound by removing the underhood insulation pad. One of the reasons the old car horns are very loud is because they have huge cavernous engine compartments with little or no insulation. The sound just reververates under the hood. My brother had a '64 Chevy Biscane with a straight six, and enough room to stand alongside the engine. The factory horn was VERY loud comming from under that hood.

And yes you can get a "Dixie" horn from J.C. Whitney.

And don't forget the Harley guys' motto "Loud pipes save lives!"

Yes they are, OR you can use them in conjunction with what you've got since they send the extra wiring. Now thats loud...

I'm glad you mentioned the subject. I was planning to start a thread.

I agree with you completely. The MM horn is anemic. I need maybe 20 to 40 decibels more than I have.

I'll be checking the resources that others have mentioned.

Again, this website is an answer to my prayer.

Thank you all.

I use a standard remote mount police siren with airhorn with an underhood siren speaker (the Crown Vic bracket fits the MM fine) Dumps out about 100watts of audio.

I have them! Six trumpets and an electric air compressor w/ interchangeable disks in the head to change tunes. I used to have them on my '78 T-Bird. They are in the attic over my garage - they take up alot of space but there is enough room behind the grill/below the bumper to mount them on the MM. PM me if you really want them and I'll see if it still works!

Hi all,
I did a side by side comparison test tonight -- MM vs. '84 Olds 98. The Olds is about 50% louder IMHO. Sounds like I have a mod to do before I sell the Olds this Spring.
Question to all you Ford Pickup truck owners:
Is there any difference in the Truck horns vs. the MM's horns? I'd like a similar mounting setup whereas I think the Olds horns will mount completely different than the MMs.

O.K., I got HORNS! A three trumpet set off of a '68 Cadillac El Dorado from the wrecking yard. Oh yeah, they be loud! I also pulled a two trumpet set off of a '63 Buick Riviera in the same yard but they weren't quite in the same league with the Cadillac horns. Total investment: $5.03. Now to mount them. Do any of you folks know where I can get a male connector like is on the OEM horn set in the MM? This would greatly simpify things for me.

Just in case anybody else tries to hook up '68 El Dorado horns (Delco Remy product) to their MM, be aware that they blow out the 15 amp MM horn relay fuse faster than Stanford can get knocked out of the NCAA tournament. Oh well, time for plan "B".
