So I'm driving down the road at about 50, needed to pass someone so I step on it. while passing, I hear a pop and the engine racing. I pull over, engine sounds normal. I try driving again and engine races but car is moving slow. I shift to 2nd gear and it seems fine in second gear. Kept it in 2nd gear, keeping the RPMs at around 2000 going approx 40mph. Made it to the gas station to call for a tow. No leaks underneath. Fluid at the right level. Marauder at the shop waiting to open tomorrow morning :(

Any ideas? Bad news?

Sounds like a tranny rebuild is in your filter.

I agree.

Did you happen to try all gears, including reverse, with and without OD on?

Reverse, first & second are fine with or without OD

Sounds like the 4th-2nd gear drop with the OD engaged. That's pretty much the only way to hurt these transmissions.

OD band is is shot...same thing happened to me, tranny rebuild and get the j-mod done at the same time. I spent $1480, which i hear was a super price. You're looking at around $1800 to $2100 from the other horror stories ive heard. Sorry to hear the bad news.
