Maury, it's been WAY too long...MVII, I think. I hope you're able to make it to KY this year.
As for the water pump, like they all said, any half competent garage can change it...no special tools or tricks needed. Stay way far away from that dealership!
Just so you don't feel TOO bad about the oil filter adapter thing, this just happened to me 2 weeks ago:
Company van, 2001 GMC Safari. Ran perfectly on Saturday, wouldn't start on Monday morning. Called fleet services and they had to towed to a dealer. Took almost a week to get it back and this is what they found:
Bad #6 fuel injector, so they replaced them all.
Fixed a few cracked vacuum hoses.
Oil & filter change
New spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.
Replaced the fuel level sending unit.
When I got it back, the heat and the interior lights no longer worked.
Want to know what it cost?
$2288.36
Now THAT'S a ripoff. Dick Beard Chevrolet/Subaru in Hyannis most definitely deserves the term "stealership".

Wow, and I thought this was bad :
I dropped off a leased work car this past Tuesday for state inspection only.
The girl said it would be about 45 minutes.
Two hours later, she calls up and says "It's done, you can pick it up. You should think about getting two new tires, it almost didn't pass."
I said "I'd have to get that approved by the leasing company; if it passed and it's done, I just want to pick it up."
She says "Yes, it passed, you can pick it up now."
On the way to pick it up, a guy calls me - the "Service Manager." He says "The leasing company approved two new tires and the brakes, it will be ready in an hour."
I said "What ? The girl told me it passed and I could pick i up, I'm on the way there right now. Why would they do that ?"
He says "It didn't pass, it failed. I called the leaseing company and they approved the tires and brakes. You would have had a blowout with those tires. The girl who called you is new here."
Two - three hours later they called back and said it was done.
When I got there I said "I'm not going to make a big deal about this because it's not my car, but I want to talk to the "Service Manager" and I want to see the tires. It looks to me like you people plowed about $600 worth of extra work into this bill."
Well, of course I was told that the "Service Manager" wasn't there and the tires were already disposed of.
I told them that in the future, even if I broke down in their parking lot, I'd be taking it somewhere else.
Final bill : over $800. Pep Boys, Bustleton Av., Phila. PA
If I had been sitting in the waiting area getting strung along for the whole five hours, well . . . :mad2:

$980???:eek::eek: I think I charged a fellow member $125 to install it. Plus no gaskets involved, just a O ring. The fan has to come out which is a whole 4 bolts and 5 minutes, then remove the belt and the water pump pulley. Its 4 bolts and the pump is in your hands. replace, tighten, and put the fan back in. replace the coolant and burp the system. Less then a hour to complete. Burping the system is the longest part.
Please post the bill, I'm curious to see what BS they added to it.
Here's the install thread of the EMP pump which costs more then a stock one and still beats the $980 they quoted you by $730.

After you have a couple of them Texan MMers come over and replace your water pump, you can drive your MM to that stealership and tell them to suck it and do a burnout in their garage bay.
Then you can come to Looseville and tell us how it felt...

As luck would have it, we had breakfast with an old friend who told us that the Service Manager and his top mechanic had leased a part of the family Mercury dealership when it closed and set up shop as independents. They serviced the Marauder from the day I bought it. Stopped in to see him and he is installing the water pump on Monday at a MUCH more reasonable price. The cost will depend on which pump we decide to use. He said in all his 20 years servicing Mercurys, he had never had to replace an oil filter adapter--just the $ 22 dollar gaskets. I'll keep you posted. Chris, thanks for the offer to help--my garage is too small and a sloping ramp is the only work area--all my tools are in storage as well as my hydraulic jack---primitive working conditions to say the least. I may take you up on your in the future--coming up on 150,000 miles, more things will probably go wrong. Now, at least I have an honest garage to go to . Things are looking up for the L'ville trip---will know definitely on Sunday when we have a big family get together. A big THANKS for all the posts ---I really appreciate it. I would NEVER return to that dealer for having the GALL to quote $980 for a water pump. I did mine, and it was one of the cheapest, easiest jobs I have ever done to a car. Crap like this makes my faith in people completely non-existent. You should complain to the owner if nothing else.
