The fill plug is on the "front" part of the diff, on the left side. It's "full" when fluid barely starts to overflow from the fill port. You have to use a 3/8" ratchet to get the plug out. If you get the plug out and nothing runs out, just stick your pinky finger in there and see if it touches the top of the fluid. If the fluid is really black like printer's ink, most likely the OE clutches are shot. (Mine were) Another easy way to tell if your clutches are bad is if you have both rear wheels off the ground (in park) and try to spin either one of the wheels, if they spin easily, they're bad.

Its either brake fluid or the axle seal took a dive.

With no fluid, you will burn it up!
Keep us posted.

Most likely your axles seals and/or axles are shot. These cars are notorious for that.
Do you have a decent Ford mechanic near you?

It requires experience or an experienced mechanic.
Expensive is a relative term.

If you remove the fill plug and it (the magnet) has a LOT of shiny metal on it you will need axles and bearings ASAP!!
Good Luck!!

Top the fluid off and start saving money. It's not a job for a shade tree mechanic.

This is why I'm ashamed of my generation...:shake:
Anyways, I will most likely be installing new clutches in my Trac-Lok one of these coming weekends. I haven't been able to find any write-ups here on the board so I'll be taking pictures and doing one myself. The axles/bearings/seals are fairly easy to do if you know anything about turning wrenches. If not, then it is best left to a mechanic.

Outer bearings and seals aren't a tough job, just time consuming and you need a few specialty tools. What year 'Rauder you got? If its an 04, it's unlikely the axles are bad but you never know until you take a look. I suggest removing the diff cover and taking a peek. At the very least, you'll have the opportunity to replace the fluid which from your desciption sounds like its shot.
I know my clutches are shot (breakaway torque is 34 ft-lbs) and the tought of having to do that job makes me nervous, mainly installing the new s-spring.
