View Full Version : Winter Marauder Anxiety

Hello everyone,
I'm not sure if I posted about this or not, but my daily driver '91 LeSabre started giving me a lot of trouble last Sunday (randomly stalling and failing to restart) so I've got an ex-GM master tech uncle of mine looking at it, but I took the Marauder out of storage last Monday and even though it's done snowing and the roads are dry, I don't like driving it with the salt still down on the roads!
My plan was initially to take the Marauder out in the middle of April, after all the snow had melted and a good rainstorm washed all the salt away, so I'm thinking that's still about 2 weeks away, so in the mean time, I'm washing the car once weekly, and driving it carefully.
Seeing as how I'm only about 2-3 weeks out until all the salt is gone, should I be worried about starting any underbody corrosion? Even though it's been a Minnesota car since day 1, my DBP is practically mint with zero rust or salt stains in the carpeting and I'd hate for anything to start.
Are Marauders pretty prone to rust, like the '90s era Town Cars, or are they a lot better?
Thank you!

Nice car man, wish I had a DBP.
I don't drive mine in the winter either. It's almost over :bigcry:
As long as the remaining salt is not wet you should be alright. I would find an alternative vehicle if there is another snow day before the nice season starts though.

I don't for see anymore snow, atleast in the next 10 days. I should have my LeSabre back in the next two weeks.
And another thing, as much as I love driving my Marauder, I don't like daily driving it, in bad traffic with lots of careless or bad drivers, in crowded parking lots and in inclement weather. I need my Buick back so I can drive something I don't care about!!!

i hear you on that!! I wont take mine out in the salt covered roads either, was lucky enough to take it for a ride two weeks ago as the roads were finally clean, but then we got more snow and now the roads are white once again:bigcry: ....the nice weather is around the corner and cant wait!
mines not a daily driver as well, for all the reasons you stated!

I can solve those problems for you.
For only a slight fee and the cost of gas you can bring them out here for the winter,(some snow from time to time, but NO SALT),and I d be glad to keep them exercised daily so you can proudly say they're daily drivers driven all winter long and nobody can give you any grief. :burnout: :coolman:

Oh, I forgot, one of my biggest anxieties with the Marauder is bird **** and the long term damage it will cause if not removed immediately. That is why I hardly drive it in the summer time, unless it's for a relaxing drive on my day off.

Sure, never drive it,keep it stored like these guys.
Never driven in rain,or snow and never had bird droppings on it.
Why drive it when you can stick it away somewhere.
It sure is a real collectors delight.

I'm on both sides of the fence. I don't even drive my Mark V in the rain, but I drive the Maruader daily. My opinion is you don't normally drive the car, so what little you will this time, after the snow and salt are gone gone, give her a good cleaning and she'll be fine. Not like your gonna make it a daily. It'll be fine. I've gotten the MArk V out a few times over the years in the snow, rain, hell even got caught in an ice storm. After clean up it was like it didn't happen.

BTW, mine has @67,000 miles. I looked underneath when I had the exhaust done and after 9 years there was barely any rust on it. Yours has been sheltered, you could prolly drive it for the next two winters straight and not have a problem.

my old Marauder was a daily driver. I drove it year round in snow, sleet, rain, hail, heat etc... until I totaled it due to hydro-planing. I'm not tyring to jump on my high horse here, but my accident really opened my eyes to the rarity of this vehicle. I still want to drive my car everywhere as a daily, but I don't want to lose another. my mindset has changed & I'd rather keep my Marauder garaged & out of inclement weather if possible. you just never know. especially since now trying to find front & rear bumpers is almost impossible.

just make sure to do as I do, wash the whole car and not just the top lol. I spend more time washing the bottom side then I do the top side. Open all the doors and trunk lid as well as hood clean those areas good. Find as many little nooks and cranny as you can underneath the car put the hose up into the frame holes etc, I don't care if I look funny laying down on a tarp on my back in a do it yourself car wash if that's what it takes. I might not have a super detailed car but she is clean top to bottom when I am done.

I dont live in Snow Country, but heck, I wont drive mine in the rain, or to the boys' baseball fields for games/practices. It is not because I cant, but the car is rare. Why take the chance of kicking rocks into the paint, or an accident in the rain? If I have to, I do, but if I have the choice, I dont. My family is blessed with a third vehicle, so I drive that. I am blessed with a wife who tolerates my obsession with motor vehicles, and allows me my indulgences of not driving the car or not eating in the car.

Here here!!! Well Said and I couldn't agree more. I live in Atlanta and the overbundance of asshats driving inn this city is astronomical compared to many other cities I have lived in. I don't take mine out in the rain, not because I don't want it getting dirty, but because peoples stupidity increases by a factor of ten in iclement weather, and i don't want to get rear ended and end up having to total the car because parts can't be found.
If you drive your's everyday, then good for you, guess what? that doesn't mean you love it more than anyone else on the board.
i find it funny that people will **** talk all day long to people that garage their cars, but notice how it never goes back to people Daily Driving it? Could it be because we respect every person's right to love their car in their own way and not critique them for when they choose to drive it?

correct.
thats another good point. risk factor goes up even under ideal conditions simply because you can't control other people on the road (DUI, medication, inexperience, weather, etc...)
I live just outside Washington, DC which is a melting pot of different cultures & ethnicities. I'm not trying to be racist nor am i pinpointing one culture in particular, but rather give you all an idea that I really dread driving around here sometimes.. and thats because some people didn't grow up in this country & are not prepared for inclement weather. they weren't educated with the driver ed classes we all took growing up. sometimes I feel the real world experience trumps the "study-the-drivers-ed-manual-then-head-to-the-dmv-and-take-the-test"
I'm sure this is common in a lot of different cities, but it feels more pronounced here.
oops sorry for the derail :(

I drive mine everyday, average about 500-700 miles a week. You guys with the clean MMs that are able to store them for the winter I give you mad props and have nothing but respect for your passion for the Merc! I don't like the miles I'm racking up but couldn't think of a better car to do it in:)

Not me I hate everyone with a garage to store these cars..:P...that is until I get mine built then it's ok...;)...If I had a garage I'd store it for the winter and drive it on as many nice days as I could. That's why I'm on the fence. I want to drive it all day everyday, but then want to store it for all time.:depress:

Where exactly did I say that I don't like driving it in the summer time? I do believe I said I don't like driving it every day to work, because that's where I get hit with the bird ****. I drive my Marauder on the weekends.
Here's an article that lays out why bird droppings are so bad for paint. Read it.
http://www.moderncarcare.com/articles/2008/01/fowl-play-the-dangers-of-birds-and-their-dropping.aspx
The Marauder is my pride & joy and is treated as such. I know how rare it is and I respect it, but I did not buy it to simply look at it.
Oh and by the way, as of Sunday, the Marauder can go back into storage until all the salt is gone, my LeSabre is fixed.

Excuse me for missing the word "hardly". But that is still a sorry ass excuse why not to drive your car. But its your excuse...
U need to be worried about a whole lot more than just bird crap, carry a bottle of ICE and a few micro fiber towels in the trunk and u will b ok.
Lets just end it, agreed?

1st day of spring was a week ago, hope the winter anxiety is gone for you soon!
We barely even had a winter here in OK, it's shorts and flip-flops weather already :)

The car is just fine in the winter. I took off all door panels and oiled them down with a paint brush. The car hasn't seen rust on the doors since. The roof is another story, but that's due to stone chips.
As far as people not driving their cars, I quit caring. It's others choosing not to enjoy every drive, not me.
