I've seen a couple of pictures of guys with their factory shifter swapped out. I recently saw justbobs and his is for his manual transmission but I still like it. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/25/e7u2yzab.jpg
The other one I saw was on rrsukis car that he's selling. http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss143/VTRauder/Sale%20pictures/shifter003.jpg
I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for installing one on my car. Maybe even help me install it. Could give me a deal for my birthday :)

Good luck!
Will require fabrication and relocation of the O/D switch.

Well first step is finding a shifter, that's the hardest part as I remember. I couldn't even tell you where I found mine this many years later. So google I guess.
Once you get over that hurdle the rest isn't a big deal. You'll need a boot big enough to fit in the console space. You'll also need to do something with the OD button, it's just a momentary switch, so it's just a matter of deciding where you want to mount the new switch.
The only other thing you need is the will to pull apart and cut into perfectly fine working parts.

Well I found this boot but I may need a little help figuring out what all goes into actually changing the shifter and what all I would exactly have to swap. Is it as simple as unbolting one shifter and bolting a new one in?

And maybe this knob but I'm not sure it would fit the shifter

ImpalaSlayer did a shifter swap in his car a few years back using a joystick from a fighter jet. IIRC, one of the control buttons on the grip (machine gun trigger or missle toggle) actuated the O/D.
Can't find any pics of it, but if you PM him, he might be able to pass along some stuff on it.

It's usually not that simple / easy.

You would be MUCH better off just adapting a new handle and/or boot. Keep in mind the factory shifter has not only a cable, but a cable for the key release, and a vacuum that releases the parking brake.

Indeed all it takes is a new knob, and a boot. No need to change out anything else. It's really rather straight forward once you have a knob and boot, oh and a button for the OD, all you need to do then is start pulling things apart and maybe cut a hole for the new button. Not sure what else this thread needs honestly.

Thanks everyone for your input. I've figured it out and I'm sure I can do it myself now. I think I may try it this weekend. Plus I found this online: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/600
I'll just stop after I get the shifter selector panel off. I'm not exactly sure what all the rest of it is for. Thanks again though and I will post pictures whenever I get around to doing it.

Scale 1-10 what's the difficulty level??
How do you engage the mechanism to move the shifter?
Where is your OD?

It wasn't hard at all once I figured out how to do it. Just a matter of taking a couple things apart. If you look on top of the shifter it says prnd21 you can actually push it down to change gears. As far as the od switch I'm probably going to end up putting the button near the center console above the cup holder. I don't have one now but it doesn't bother me now I don't need right now.
