View Full Version : Leaks Tempting Me to Ditch Marauder ...

I'm going to rename it "Leaky." My differential has been resealed 4 times since I had the gears changed (Has a Ford Racing Cover). I've went, with and without gaskets (Felpro when it had a gasket). Finally got it stopped leaking (for now at least).

Had to fix leaks at the Power Steering pump hose connections. (That is now dry) this year.

Had to fix a transmission leak at the tail-shaft this year. (Also dry now).

But NOW, the tranny is leaking at the front. (Mechanic says it is likely the "converter pump seal" ... I know little about automatic transmissions). Says it will be minimum $600 just to pull apart and diagnose, could run as much as $1200.

What he heck!! This is a garage kept 83,000 miles ... serviced at Ford recommended intervals. Never been down a track. Three minor mods (Ford Racing 4.10 gears, Lidio tune, JLT cold air kit).

I had planned to keep this car until 250,000 miles or the government ban of internal combustion engines (whichever comes first). But it's starting to tick me off.

Someone talk me down from the ledge or I swear I'll trade it in on a mind-numbing import!!

I really don't understand. By comparison, my Mustang GT has been thrashed and abused and is dry as a bone (and has no mechanical issues).

Depending how long your car sits that could be the reason for the leaks. Seals get dry and crack...don't give up on her these are awesome cars!

I just did the two seals on the front pump on mine. One for the pump itself, and one for the torque converter. The one leaking is the pump seal (it's like a giant O-ring). This is the parts needed. Straight from Ford they were less than 20 bucks. It's a very common problem with these, unfortunately. It's not just you!!

REMOVE AND INSPECT LABOR TIME is only 4.2 Hours. My shop labor rate is 85/hr so that's 357.00. 600 sounds steep.

If i was doing the full job, it'd be around 485 with fluid. These are really easy transmissions to pull. Not a reason to sell her IMO. Good luck.

Thanks Dave. If you have the part numbers, I may just go buy them and find a tranny shop to do the work. I imagine Ford would want a fortune.

Sure. I bought every seal for the damn thing when I did mine, but I'm sure they can tell you which is which since you've had a couple done already.

I ordered the front pump seal, front pump gasket, torque converter seal, tail shaft seal, and selector shaft seal.

F-Pump Seal= 2L3Z-7A248-AA
F-Pump Gasket= F2VY-7A136-A

The torque converter gasket is one of the three below.

Seal= F2VY-7A248-A
Seal= D5AZ-7B498-A
Seal= 7W7Z-7052-A

Parts total (List Price for all 5) = 42.79

take a deep breath....and another.....now just ask for help from a mechanic type member in your area. post a thread, there is no doubt someone would be willing to help. i'm sure a few bucks and a case of beer will get it done.
if there's not a member in your area talk to your friends and find the best long term mechanic they have to get the work done right the first time.

good luck

I'm going to rename it "Leaky."....

Hey, that's the nickname I gave to my....umm, nevermind. :D

Dude...where have YOU been hiding? Another Carolina Marauder coming out of nowhere, and once again from the right half of the state. Is there a secret society of MM owners in Eastern NC or something?

Would be great if you and all the other 'stealth' MMers in your neck of the woods could make it to the BOC in May!

That's right, take a deep breath and step away from the import lot.

This is accurate and sage advice. Don't let a couple (hopefully) easy fixes detract you from a fulfilling life with your Marauder. Merely, see this fixes as Marauder boo-boos and you have to get a band aid and and patch her up and take her out to play again.

If you sell you will regret it because someone will buy this and fix the leaks and modify it into a bad-ass Marauder and you will say "well damn, that used to be my car"

*puts hands in pockets and takes a long slow deep whistle. A lowly tumbleweed drifts by. In the distance a dog barks. But there is no joy in Mudville, because Casey, mighty Casey sold his Marauder*

Let's write a different ending shall we

Wow...I'm going to give my MM a hug right now! 😢

I had the same problem with an old Marauder, strange as it may sound, I took it to a muffler and exhaust shop that fixed me right up, never had another problem.

I'd research another shop, don't give up, this should be a fairly inexpensive easy fix, we can rebuild it, we have the technology

Never fill a diff right after its been sealed. Let it sit over night before putting gear oil in it. This little trick has saved me aggravation.

minimum $600 just to pull apart and diagnose, could run as much as $1200

that to me seems high I had my truck and crown vic dropped and diagnose for about 400.00 not sure if the Marauder is a-lot harder to drop than other cars but that should not add that much to the cost

+1 on letting the rear diff sit overnight. I have a after market cover which helped a lot. No leaks and even 1 bolt is sheared.

You guys forgot about the oil filter adapater gasket. Thats a common leak on all MM's that people forget about. Id get the FelPro Gasket for the replacement and call it a day.

A movie Dad once said, "With these cars, comes great responsibility."

You sell the car.
You buy a Prius.
You hate the Prius,
Enraged you try an run someone over in the Prius.
You can't run anyone over in the Prius.
You hate yourself for selling the Maruader.
Don't hate yourself.
Get Insight, oh wait, no, aaa...

Thanks everyone. I'm officially talked down from the ledge. I was just getting ready to spend a bunch of money on her anyway (deferred maintenance).

Special thanks to Dave for part numbers.

These are on the to do list:

1) Tranny seals replacement
2) Rear tires.
3) Pads & Rotors
4) Stainless brake lines
5) Sway bars
6) Repair of worn seat bolster
7) Floor mats
8) Repair of floor mat hook (drivers side)
9) Rear bumper respray.
10) Dentless ding removal (two small dings)

She's my daily driver. We've been so close for so long that sometimes I forget how much I enjoy her.

Oh ... and yes. I moved from North Carolina (really miss the Carolina Marauders) to Springfield, Missouri (couldn't refuse the job). We love it here in the Missouri Ozarks.

Thanks everyone. For now ... my garage only holds Ford products. (Explorer, Marauder, Mustang)
