View Full Version : A novice question about Superchargers:

I'm sure that almost everyone here is familiar w/the whining whistle noise that a Supercharger makes. Do some Superchargers whistle more than other? And if so, why is that? And is that something that can be made more obvious or more stealth on any given Supercharger?

The Kenny Brown literature I have been reading says that the pitch can be tuned to a customer's liking.

Roots type blowers don't make nearly as much as a whine as centrifucal blowers do.

Also, usually the bigger the blower, louder the whine.

The Centrifugal is a small rotor that spins very fast for a high pitch whine.

The roots the rotors are much larger like 2 flour rolling pins for a deeper whine.

The whine is the sound of the air making contact with the rotor.

I once saw a video of an '03 Cobra with a Kenne Bell Blowzilla, and that thing was just LOUD. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE :burnout:

Roots type blowers don't make nearly as much as a whine as centrifucal blowers do.

That's the impression that I've been getting because I've seen vidoes of cars that have centrifugal type superchargers, and the noise what quite noticeable, whereas all the videos that I've watched of cars w/the roots type Superchargers weren't as noticeable at all.

I didn't know if that was simply coincidental though since it's kinda difficult to make a judgement call like that simply listening to the audio of some video. However, I remember reading in one of the many write-ups on the 2005 Ford GT that the driver stated that the whine was barely noticeable even to him while he was driving the car. And since that car has it's engine right behind the driver and pasenger seats, it kinda gave me the impression that roots type blowers/superchargers aren't as noisey because that's the type that the GT has.

personally, I don't like that noise. I'd rather hear the sound of the engine itself. Furthermore, if I had a S/C'd engine, I wouldn't want to advertise it because then nobody would want to race. I prefer the stealth approach. Atleast when it comes to S/Cing anyway.

So this "Blowzilla" S/Cer that you're refering to......is that a roots type, or a centrifugal type S/Cer????

I talked to David frey about this, they no longer do it.

That is the problem I'm having. Noboby wants to play anymore. :burnout:

LOL, I don't know if you used to watch "The Munsters" on TV when you were just a little shaver like I used to, but your comment reminds me of how the Dodgers baseball team let herman Munster try out for their team, and by the time he got done practicing w/them, everybody else ran off the field, and Herman Munster then said, "Nobody wants to play with me" :bigcry:

You should take a road trip to some different states, Haggis. Run over to Virgin...nm too many cops. Head over to w. virginia and PA and see what they think of you there:beer:

And if you're ever down south there are NO cops around here...:D

As for whine...Marauderman's didn't whine much at all from what I could tell...his exhaust was so great.

But if you ever see the video with the S/C CrownVic on MotorTrend or Autoweek...that thing whines like a crazy mofo!!!

Isn't the Kenne Bell some sort of twin screw SC?

Around my neck of the woods, every body that hears a 'whine' coming from a vehicle just assumes its the power steering pump running low on fluid!!!!!

Somewhere, someone is making up a really good comment about this...

I was just gonna say this--mine is apparently tuned "low" cause it is one of the lowest sounding Vortech I've ever heard--just what I ordered...so Martyo must be correct......Again Thanks Dennis....

I can vouch for that. If I wasn't specifically listening for it, I may not have heard it at all. That's the way I like it. Sneaky. Heh.

Thanks for your replies people.

Todd, nice pic........... I remember the jet airplane sound that you used to hear when Herman Munster hit the baseball out of the park. They don't make shows like that anymore.

Paxton stated that with their latest centrifugal blowers (Novi series) they changed the internal gearing to helical gears and reduced blower noise. Maybe it was Vortech (same thing). I think part of the noise is gear whine. I have a Novi 1000 and you can only hear it at lower rpm like idle. It doesn't take much for the exhaust to drown it out as rpm climb.

I put the roots style AED supercharger on my Tbird and you can't hear it at all until the by-pass valve closes when you step on the gas. My wife would not drive it if it made any loud noises. She was surprized at how quiet it is. As I told her I only wanted to feel it during take off not listen to it.
