Greetings. I have an '04 MM that is exhibiting the usual signs of oil in the intake (occasional smoke at start-up, pinging). I have an oil filtering device (bought from Rinehart), but it mounts on the driver's side cam cover, connects to the intake tube (I have a JLT) with a rubber hose, and doesn't seem to do anything - it never has any oil in it.

So, I've been shopping for a proper oil separator that attaches at the PCV on the passenger side. I've narrowed it down to either JLT, UPR, or Moroso, and was wondering what people are using and what they think of them. I have searched the site quite a bit, but haven't gotten a good sense of which products are viewed the most favourably.

I like the price of the UPR stuff, and it looks to be good quality, but I'd prefer to have people's first-hand opinions. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Start up smoke is usually caused by valve seals being worn.

I did a whole thread about oil catch cans and it has some pretty good info inside it. Search Google for ' how to properly build an oil catch can' and you will find my thread on here.
