I would say it depends on what you where doing? Was that a peak? I'd say that's on the high side for steady driving but not to bad.

Do a search there is lots of debate on the subject. I can't think why the jmod would increase trans temp? My temp went up a little with the Zack tune. But I think that was because the TC stayed unlocked longer.

For reference when My system was stock I'd see steady 188-190 on the highway. If I was having fun or going up a large hill it would Peak up to 200ish

I have a big cooler installed with a 180 thermostat and I've never seen temps over 185.

Mine runs 180* to 205* averaging around 190*.....won't hurt it but the fluid life falls off quite rapidly above 200*.....there are charts on the net!!

It's a known fact that "Oil Catch Cans" elevate trans temps by as much as 20*!!:eek: Removal will extend trans life greatly!!!;)

Zack tune, damn my oil catch can....time to build a tranny fluid catch can;)

WT is the setting for Water Temp.

You'll have to add the Xgauge for the Trans temp
http://www.scangauge.com/support/x-gauge/ford-specific-xgauges/

Average coolant temp should be 188 degrees.

Trans temp should be less than 180 degrees. I don't know what everyone above is talking above. 180 degrees and up for a prolong period of time will cut the life of the fluid down a lot or could burn stuff up.

If you're blowin' "tranny fluid" too you have real problems!!:shake:

I run 190-195 steady on the highway going 70+ with a Zack tune and no J-mod. Been as high as 202 degrees. Is something wrong with mine or is it just fluid is broken down?

Yeah, i got the xgauge tranny temp. Tranny Runs around 190 stop and go and the coolant runs at 198-200.

Would a temperature increase mean worn out fluid? Im pretty sure im due for new coolant, atleast 3 years old(60k miles)....and about 20k on the tranny fluid

Agreed! Chris at Circle "D" says you want to keep it at or below 185* or you start to shorten the life of the trans, highest mines ever went in the summer months was 188* with bad fluid.

I have a Tru-Cool 24,000 btu that was recommended by they guy that built my trans. Without the thermostat I never saw a temp over 140F. I believe the stock thermostat opens at 180 and the only one tru-cool sells opens at 180. So that's what I went with. It takes a good 1/2 of driving to get there and settles at 182 on the areoforce.

I've installed an auxillary B&M trans cooler in-line with the OEM cooler.
The B&M has its' own thermostat and fan and works great.
The fan will come on when I'm in stop & go traffic of if I'm hot lapping it at the drag strip.
My transmission temps almost never go over 180 degrees.

(I also installed a Hughes deep sump finned transmission pan.)

Running at 195F (should be 180 ideal) is not good for your transmission, and it's not even summer yet. I'm betting you haven't serviced the transmission recently if at all since getting it and won't spend $100 to help protect your $3000 transmission?

My Cooler = 24,000 GVW / 22,000 BTU ratings
http://www.transmissioncoolers.us/4920-1.html

Thermal Bypass:

I use factory trans cooler and the trans fluid must reach 180 - then the secondary thermal bypass opens and fluid gets to ride in the aux. cooler. The ones made by LONG are generally accepted to be very good.

According to Fred Brown, who rebuilt my 4R75W, the probe for the Trans Oil Temp should go into the pan
and the temps should NEVER go over 200F. Anything cooler than 200F is better.
As soon as you see your oil getting anywhere near 200F, it needs to be changed.

Mine runs around 165-170 with a JMOD and a DR sourced cooler.

Amsoil ATF dropped my trans temp before any other mods were done.

I did a flush about 20k miles ago, and one 20k before that. Tranny was rebuilt at 107k. Its time to do it again. If i drain the pan with mercon v, can i add the amsoil atf to the remaining fluid left in the tranny or can the 2 not be mixed?

Ideal trans temp should be 180* Fluid & filter should be changed every 15 /20,000 miles. If you have a after market tq convertor a trans cooler is a must. Because our oem trans cooler have thermostate after market cooler should be pre oem cooler. The best spot for trans temp sensor is just as it exits for most accurate reading.

I would not just a simple pan drop, you should have a full trans fluid exchange done. A pan drop only swaps out 4-5 quarts but I would have the filter changed as well.

I have an Art Carr deep trans pan, every 15k miles I drain out 5 quarts of and replace.

I ran a 40k on my previous car 165-180 stop and go. Even in the summer I never saw 200*. That's the same one I'm going with once I get the car back together.

I've never seen more than 177 on mine in stop and go traffic on a hot humid summer day with the AC on. I've got a Tru Cool 40k + BTU trans cooler mounted in position one (in front of the radiator).

This'll give you a rough idea...cooler is better but 200* isn't terrible with routine fluid changes!!

Burt,

That's what I used to think but Fred Brown explained it to me.
The oil in your pan is the best measure of how well your cooling system is working.
If your oil is too hot and it is FRESH oil, something is either wrong with your cooler or your tranny.
