View Full Version : Smoked an Impala LT1

Saw a white Impala 94 or 95 in rear view. It was lowered and had a big tach ontop of the dash. As it got nearer he had a mean sounding exhaust.
He pulled along side and at about 20 MPH we both down shifted into first and floored it.
My 2004 Marauder pulled ahead fast and kept pulling ahead for 2 blocks - then we hit traffic. I had him by 2 cars and would have taken more.
He pulled up and said 'nice car'. 'IS THAT STOCK???'
I said 'yup.'
I then said 'I think I got ya."
He said 'you sure did. That's really stock?'
'Yup, 4.6 Litre'.
Told him I was going to get 4:10's and a Super charger and then drove away.
Man I am glad I took him.

The Chebby guys won't believe this.
The post on his board will say you couldn't possibly have been stock

Congratulations. But hey, atleast the guy was cool about it. When you beat most of the punks who're ricers, they flip you the bird at the next traffic light,or just give you a cold cocky stare. Which only proves how childish and low class many of them are. When I went to the Atco NewJersey dragstrip w/my Marauder to the Impala SS event to race all of those Impala guys, there were atleast 15 of them there. And atleast 14 out of all 15 of them were great guys. They were real friendly, went out of their way to make me, Marty, and FatBastid feel welcome at their racing event, and they even were very quick to compliment me on my car, even the ones I beat. And that was really great, because quite frankly, I was a little embarrassed that they even named the whole event
"The Impalas vs. The Marauders" and only three of us Marauder owners had the gonads to show up!!!!! I didn't understand that, cuz everyone wants to compare their MM's to the Impala, but where were all those guys that day???
My point is, that so far, I've found almost every single Impala guy to be a class act, and a very good sport. Many of them even gave me tips on racing, as well as some ideas as to what I can do to my car should I ever want to make it faster (especially our own "Stumpy" from this board who is an Impala owner himself!). And let me tell you, I've been on this board long enough to realize that by the time that day at the track was over, I had to admit that MOST of those Impala SS guys know a LOT MORE about dragracing than MOST of us Marauder guys do.
So I'm glad that you beat that Impala SS w/your Marauder, because I'd always route for the Marauder, and I DO think that our cars look A LOT BETTER than their cars do. But at the same time, I also have a lot of respect for not only the power of that LT1 engine, but for most of the Impala owners themselves. ;)

I seriously doubt the car you beat was an Impala SS, considering they never came in white. It was most probably a Caprice, which I guess did have the LT-1 as an option.
Nice kill anyway though.

My experience with the SS folks I've met has been good. We've run together at Hallsville (TX) a couple of times and the guys I met were class acts.

Agreed about the attitude thing. Most of the SS folks I've met (there have only been a few here is Utah) have been really cool. I don't know this for a fact, but my opinion is that most people who own bigger performance cars are probably a little bit older, more mature and less likely to freak out on you for not owning what they own, or worse yet, beating them at the track.
And I know that this is going to come as a shock to some people, but not all of us subscribe to the Chevy vs. Ford religious wars. :)

Yes we do. As long as it's in fun.

I for one do NOT have any loyalty to ANY car manufacture weather it be Ford, Chevy, or whatever. I buy a car because I like how it moves and for the way it sounds and looks. Whatever manufacture builds what I like, then I'll buy it if I can afford it. As far as I'm concerned, there are very few cars made these days that are worthy of our loyalty. And among the few that are, most of them aren't even within my reach financially. The Marauder is one of the rare exceptions to that rule.

BillyG - I totally agree with what you said. I often have this discussion with my pop. He was a Mopar man back in the day, nothing else even existed according to him. None of them sum*****es ever paid me a dime to ride their heaps so I buy and drive what I like and can afford no matter what the make.
I almost picked up one of those Imp's a few years ago, hell of a nice car. I like that LT-1 torque and the fact that they have much support from the aftermarket. You gotta market a car to sell it and you've gotta sell a car to have people want to R&D parts for it.

BillyG, I couldn't agree with you more. I buy a car based on it's performance...and looks of course!

I'm glad to see that you guys know where I'm coming from on this topic. To further illustrate my viewpoint on that, I'll also add that there's atleast one if not two or three things that I do NOT like about 95% of the cars produced today on our soil as well as overseas. Either the body style is of the typical corny jellybean shape variety,or it has that wedge shape to it like it was once used as a door stop by godzilla, and/or was hit in the back by a truck (like the Ford Mustang since the 90's)(sorry guys) or the car in question has the typical GIANT tail light and headlight lenses that make it look like it's a spaceship out of a 1950's science fiction B-movie, or it has an eggbeater sounding 4 or 6 cylinder engine, or it just doesn't have enough power anyway.
So IMO that takes care of just about 95% of new cars. Out of the remaining 5% that have great looks, a great sounding V8 engine, and plenty of power 4.9% of them cost over 80K(enter the Jaguar, maybe one of the Ferrari cars I've seen, and especially the 2005 Ford GT). So having a price tag that heavy leaves me out as well as the majority of the American public.
Once or twice in a lifetime, you find that rare car that is in that miniscule 0.1% that is not only close to having everything you want, but is also within your reach financially (even if it's a bit of a stretch for you). Enter the Marauder. It isn't exactly everything I want in a car (only the Ford GT and maybe one of the Jags are), but the Marauder is somewhat close, while at the same time has a sticker price that is within many people's reach(including mine).
It doesn't have it all, but it's close IMO. It looks just too cool, has a V8 engine that sounds great when you wind it up, and has some respectable power(although perhaps a bit lacking in the latter in the stock configuration). So atleast it comes close. It doesn't quite do it all for me, and that's ofcourse why I've modified my Marauder to the extent I have(and might not stop there).I think the car should've came w/a 350 engine(5.7L). But it was close enough for me to be willing to drop the coin that was required, and IMO that's more than I can say about probably any other car on the market today under 35K.
For that price, what other car compares? Nothing does in my book.

Well I want to respond to this thread but BillyGman keeps stealing my lines!!!!!!!
No Prob!! But I still get people at work say with all the new cars and the styling out thier, they would still buy a MM over any of the new styles out thier!
Yes they could have dropped a 5.7 Lt engine in it and done a whole bunch of things to her. And this point has been debated in this group since I have been involved in this Forum. So I wont start that again.
MM will always be a head turner and for the money, a really good deal!
And I do get into the Ford vs Chevy thing, But just for some good fun!!!!

Ditto, black, black cherry, and green were the only colors. I own a black one and while my MM is NOT broken yet, I'd say the SS is faster from a low speed rolling start. The SS has gobs of low end torque.

What rookie1 said. This was proved at the Shootout in November, to me anyway. Typical Marauder/SS race seems to go like this: SS off like a shot, leaving us at the line, 1/2 track prettyclose to even, end of 1/4 we got a door and a fender on them. All that is a little give and take depending on the drivers. SS guys are a real class bunch though. I'm proud to call all the ones I met friends!
