View Full Version : million dollar question
Okay here is the deal. I have 150k on my car. I love it and its not given me any reason to not trust her. However, I have a couple guys begging me to sell it. If I did I would by another one less miles.
What I am trying to do is get everyone s opinion on what tge major costs would be for the major failures. Like what will a tranny run approx?
As long as the costs aren't crazy I'd rather roll the dice with the one I know.

Don't sell it.
150k on a Panther-platform car is nothing. Look at how many taxis and police cars go double that, with hard use.
Since you specifically mention the transmission, the 4R70W is one of the best Ford has (had) to offer. Given proper maintenance it should last as long as rest of the car. When was the last time you changed the fluid? Is it giving you any cause for concern now? Transmission repairs *can* be anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending on what went wrong, but still nowhere near the cost of an equivalent replacement vehicle.

Had my tranny rebuilt and jmod done for $1480, the OD band gave out at 107k. 144k on it now. Nobody told me to take it out of overdrive if i was going to floor it until afterwards. Gear shifts from 4th to 2nd is what kills the tranny.

If it's good condition keep it and save the headache of the buy and sell. But if you have the money there is marauders out there with low miles and very clean but that's just IMOP....
Thanks guys. I wasn't worried about miles. But then I saw so many guys replacing their stuff early. I actually have 168 k and its a beast. I agree with cab statement I want to get 400k then make her a full blown crazy woman! Lol ill be posting mods soon.

I had 187k on my first one when I got rid of it, the only mechanical failures were the trans, a water pump, and the gasket between the oil filter adapter and block.
I did have electrical problems though due to chaffed wires that drove me insane.
if the body is nice, keep it.

Then it would be a no brainer for me, I'd keep it. Drive the heck out of it and save for the complete motor trans rearend rebuild:beer:

This is so true. I knew I'd love my Merc. I just didn't think I'd really love it as much as I do. And with meeting SO many great people from this site just adds to my to my love for this car.
