View Full Version : First time out at the track

Well I have a lot of questions and maybe some tips for helping improving my reaction times. This was my first time actually racing for real on a track now. The best I could run was a 13.41 with a reaction time of .811. I know my car can perform way better than that I just need to practice and get some tips. I will be uploading a video and pics soon but I was looking for any input right now. I also think i'm going to put 4.10 gears on it and long tube stainless works headers soon. But I think the gears are coming within the next couple of weeks. I'm going to do the headers though with probably some borla mufflers with the 4 inch tips.

13.41 @ what mph and what was your 60'?
It says in your sig you have a JLT intake, 2nd set of cats removed and tips, anything else? Tune, supercharger, Nitrous?

By the way the camaro red lighted and my launch sucked but I still managed to catch back up with him.

Thats for my first marauder. My second marauder has a eaton installed and a jlt intake on it with a jmod I believe.

Gotcha, didn't see the Eatonized.
Honestly the headers will do a good bit of help but highly recommend getting the car dyno tuned after to get the full benefit of them otherwise it's a waste.
4.10s may help but could also cause you to spin a lot more if you don't have a good tire to grip and go. The key with these big cars is the launch. I've driven Trilogy cars with 4.10s and stock gears, both are fun but 4.10s can be overkill without the proper tire such as a wide drag radial. At that point you start to open up more doors as you might have to upgrade your axles, diff unit, etc etc.
Headers and a stall converter would do you good.

Torque converter huh? Tell me more as I have no idea what that does. Please forgive my ignorance. And how much would a upgrade cost. This is what I found:

What does a Torque converter do and what is the use of the stall? http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/images/smilies/blush.jpg
Its a fluid coupling that connects the engine to the transmission.
Stalling refers to stepping on the brake (with the transmission in gear), and revving the engine up ('footbraking'). With a higher stall converter, you can bring the revs up to the rated stall speed, and launch the car closer to the power range, or right in the power range.

My 60' was 2.07 330' 5.72 and the 1/8 was 8.7@ 83.33. I know I can run faster because I ran this ss camaro a couple of times and anytime he ran close to my reaction time I beat him but one race he had a reaction time of .654 and he ran a 12.9 I just need to practice a little and maybe open it up a bit with those headers and maybe anything else anyone can suggest.

Your car should net roughly a 1.8 flat with stickies. That would drop you right at 13.0. Food for thought if you want to keep your current gear. Up here most of us run a much smaller DR to change up our effective gear ratio. That alone will probably net you a 12.8.
Also, without fail, every time I pop the headlight out I gain 2 tenths.
Other than that, I really haven't done much except exhaust and started right where you are 13.1's - 13.3's, since the exhaust and learning the car, I run consistent 12.1's now (with an automatic...)

Slow down there I have no idea what you're talking about. dr? drive ratio i'm guessing? I need a class on everything sorry... 12.1 is awesome if only I could ever run that

With 4.10's and some dr (drag radials) you should be in the 12's. keep the 60' low and you will be surprised what your car could do.

For the RT (Reaction time), you need to start earlier. I know it sounds obvious, but its true. You should be hitting the gas at the 2nd or 3rd yellow light. Experiment until you get a red light and adjust as needed. If you wait until the green is lit before you hit the gas, you'll be late.
To get a better 60 foot time with the Eaton, you can't just nail the gas. You'll have to figure out how to walk the car out without spinning the tires and also the appropriate launch rpm's. Honestly, I'd probably master this before you do the gears. The 4.10's will probably make the spinning worse with street tires.
Practice, practice, practice.

This is what I ran on street tires on a rain damp track;
0.191 1.881 5.362 8.227 84.99 10.744 12.862 106.71
You can walk it out and get a ~1.8 60' on street tires.

^All good info. The launch is the key to get a good run, master that and all you have to do is keep the wheel straight and foot on the gas threw the traps (beam at the end of the 1/4 mi).

Was this with 3.55 gears or 4.10's? OEM rear wheel/tire size? Stock stall converter or aftermarket?
Looks like I have some more practicing and improvement to do. Best 60' for me on street tires is 1.9x, and the 'x' was a high number. I'm still running a stock stall converter, which might be hurting me a little bit.
Trying to mod the driver some more before I do too much more to the car.

4.10, 3,500 T/C, Vortech, Stock Wheels and KDWS 255.
No track traction and plenty of power to spin them. The point being you can walk it out with practice.
If you plan on continuing to race get widened OEMs with MT Drag Radials.
I stage at the same spot, shallow, and anticipate the third yellow to nail it, but every car is different.
I have over 260 passes in the MM.

4.10's, slicks, and leave on the 3rd yellow.
Should haul some ass. Trying to run a great time and get everything out of a car without slicks is like trying to use bowling shoes to ice skate.

Totally agree.
And as for walking it out? Not this cat. That's where all the fun is. Where else can you experience that kind of a lauch?

True that! Best part of the track is when you can only see the top of your hood and the horizon.

I would put some money into tires and wheels before headers.

I'm going to use all the advice everyone gave me so i'm looking forward to going back out. I'm gonna wait until I get some headers and the exhaust I want first though. I really wanna try the taking the headlight approach when I run next time also. I think I may have headers done around the 4th of July.

Hmmm having fun, but don't brake gears!!! LOL
Lance could you post a time slip or just the numbers???
Here's the best slip I have for time trials in the 1/8 mi, it was quicker in eliminations as I had dialed 8.38, had to be sure to get on the brakes on the top end to keep from running out... I believe 8.42 was my best "on the brakes" et...
