Anyone know what this thing is? I was dumping the fluid out of my stock pan and this was in it. I have a feeling this should be in my trans.

its called "the lollypop" we all have them:) just something from the factory, not sure what they used it for. I am sure someone will post up its use in the original build. It is ok, you don't need it

I believe it in place so no trash gets in the tranny before the dipstick.

Yep what they said, its in the dipstick hole from the factory where the trans are built...it falls into the pan when they instal the dipstick tube...that is a sign that your fluid and filter has never been changed

Whew, thought I had a problem for a minute. The trans was serviced at 58k...unless the dealer scammed the previous owner. They must have put it back in thanks everybody

Dealer prolly did service it. Dealers don't want to drop the pan. Tried to tell me the filter doesn't need changed. They hook their recycle machine up thru trans lines and suck it out and charge $129 or $159 for it.

Tried to tell me the filter doesn't need changed. They're half right.
If the filter was changed early on, as in somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 miles, then it really doesn't ever need to be changed again unless the fluid gets contaminated or the transmission needs to be opened up to repair a failure.
Most wear occurs in the first 10-15,000 miles from new, so a fluid and filter change at that time, and regular fluid changes thereafter will keep your transmission happy for a very long time.
