View Full Version : New Marauder to the family...

1Marauder
04-16-2013, 07:00 PM
Many of you know I've wanted this car since I sat in a new one in 2004, and have been looking seriously for almost a year. I tried to look back through my PM's to find which one of you said to me, "You don't pick your Marauder... your Marauder picks you!"

After basically giving up on my search, while sitting in bed a month ago drinking coffee and looking at my IPAD, an AutoTrader Alert "pinged" my email with an 11,600 car at a dealer in Nashville. I picked up the phone and called, and was the first caller (of about 700 I was informed later). The Internet Manager at the dealer actually said, "How the heck do you even know the car is here???? I just hit ENTER at my desk a second ago to put it on AUTO TRADER!" And after speaking with the salesperson and having him take the CAR KEYS (so no-one else could get it) and having some photo's sent my way --I told them I'd take it at high retail bluebook! *Based on the data they'd given me. I did have the car checked out at the Ford Dealer next door.

And with that said, I have many thanks to give to you all... From TEXAS (Enforcer) to ARIZONA (Big Mike) to the EAST COAST (Mark and Sally)-- I have many shouts out to all of you who've offered, viewed cars, given advice, and helped me all along the way.

We now have a New Marauder to the MMNET Family (I attached pictures!)

11,960 miles -
300A
BLACK
2003

Specs as I understand them:
JLT CAI
FlowMasters
Riechart TUNE
Transmission
OEM Spoiler
New BFG

Never driven in rain
Showroom in, out, and underneath!

More specs, and verified specs to come.

Missed Lousville by just ONE DAY. So close to perfection, but had a meeting take my Friday and Saturday AM... So I flew into Nashville and picked him up (yes it is a HIM) and drove him through Nashville, to Loretta Lynn's Dude ranch, to church, through Memphis, accross the Mississippi, to Arkansas greeting center and rest stop, and on to Little Rock last week. (photo's in order)

Car is resting fully detailed at Little Rock Airport (underground) now. Flying back Saturday to drive him to OKC... then back to Fayetteville ARK.

On 4/25 I am starting accross country from Fayetteville ARK and hoping to drive Route 66 most of the way.

First stop will be to see MMNET Member Rocky in Tulsa Oklahoma... Will stop and look at antoher Marauder in Amarillo, and will probably stop and see Big Mike in Arizona if he is free.

If anyone wants to stop/meet/greet or be a part of this 1Marauder's epic journey... PM me or email GrantPPI@aol.com. Or maybe you just want to give me your contact data incase I NEED it :( or a mechanic along the way! NOTE: Not looking for a place to crash -- just someone to say HI to and burn rubber with! I'd love to see your ride... And ride a mile or 30 down 66 with you.

I am checking a big one off of my bucket list here! Plan on buring rubber at least once in every state along the way- and driving a BADA$$ ride on Route 66... greasy cheesburgers and all!

If anyone is interested, I've also thought about updating the journey with writing and photo's etc... Let me know.

Anyway, I promised I'd update --and wanted you all to see the photo's AND to thank you all again for your help. You are one of the greatest groups of people I've been blessed to meet, and I am honored to become one of your own.

Grant

PS Also looking for "Big Haired" RedHead with horned rimmed glasses to share a milkshake with on Route 66 -- but not holding my breath.

PPS Forgot to tell you! On test drive, driving at approx 35MPH I asked the salesperson if I could "get on it" a little -- He said, "Dude-why not? It is your car--You already paid for it!" I quickly depressed the gas peddle about halfway (Note: I did NOT floor it) -again at almost 40MPH - and the car rear tires immediatly broke lose... and moved about three feet to the left --meaning I was now aligned to drive UP the curb and into the trees. I gassed it, steared into it and re-aligned the car to remain on the street. And after a few quite seconds, the salesperson said, "Might not want to do THAT again!"

We went back to look-- DRY PAVEMENT, ROUGH CEMENT, 70 degrees, NEW BFG's, spotless car, nothing on roadway. And interestingly--another test drive car from the same dealership was behind us as witnesses:D

This thing is a BEAST!

Might be a good idea to pick up a copy of "Ghost Towns of Route 66". Lots of interesting buildings and stops from days gone by on route 66. I bought a copy and hope to someday drive on Route 66 to visit them myself.

I know the feeling because I just picked up mine a week ago. Although, not nearly as nice condition as yours, its MY 1st Marauder! ;) Today was the first time driving it (no test drive for me...long story)! Unbelievable!!!

These cars are amazing! Good luck on your trip!

All,

Second post on the trip west. Much to tell and photos to add later.

My 17year old son joined me on a portion of the trip. He flew with me to Little Rock to pull the beast out of long term covered parking. Last photo was of the car detailed in storage... 1st photo (posted later) is of the car completely covered in green pollen.

My right eye itches just thinking of it.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/8y3ejy5a.jpg

My son Berk took the wheel 20 minutes into the trip... And proceeded to drive almost the entire way from LIT to OKC... We stopped at SONIC once to eat, and once for the photo (attached later). We cruised OU (remember he is 17) and got a great photo on sidewalk in front of stadium.

He flew out of OKC and I drove BACK to Fayetteville Ark, to my corp office, and left on the big trip to California this afternoon.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/jeqebebu.jpg

I figured out what the "flutter" was in my right rear... The car now has 13500 miles and had the original tires... Yep the tires are a few months older than my 12.5 year old kid... And as I researched how to read the age, and the many stated RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT AFTER ----- time advisories -- which for all tires was years less that what I've been crushing on, i am getting NEW tires! (BTW-- the original tires LOOKED brand new)!

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/7uhy4uve.jpg

I am currently in TULSA OK... sitting in Bill Knight Ford, getting tires installed. Many thanks to all members that posted tires sizes and tips. i spent an entire day trying to buy another brand besides BFG and trying to find the nittos in OKC ( I also found out that discount tires now has the YOKAHAMA YK 580 in our sizes...) but I just couldn't bring myself to install rubber that is made for a sub-brand... Call me stupid, old fashioned, a numbskull... I remembered that one of the members mentioned that the Ford Stores Matched prices... And thus here I sit getting new BFG's in staggered sizes installed for a great price.

I copied the alignment specs (again thanks car fixer) for them to use... As am also having a new set of KYB rear stuts installed as well.

Picture to come later... As soon as the car hits the ground, I am headed west. Will post photo 's later... And have much much much more to share!

Yes, SO FAR i have brodied in TENN, painted a cul-de-sac with numerous doughnuts in ARK, and slid sideways in OKLA...

Welcome new Maurader family,1 Marauder. Good things come to people who wait. Finding a Marauder nine (9) years after first being interested in these cars with under twelve (12) thousand miles, like new is a very lucky find. I bought my 2003 Maurader in July of 2002 new. It is number #1,024 produced. It now has only 2,228 miles. Enjoy your like new Marauder.

OK,

So a back track... left my Dad's house in OKC... And headed to Fayatville ARK... And just before ARK (leaving Oklahome) I pulled over at the rest stop.

In the parking lot there, there were about 50 motorcycles, and with them were 50 or so riders, from each socio-economic strata... Each motorcycle very different, old-new-rare-showroom, and each rider too -- Each very different, although each appeared to be about the same age.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/e9yde5u8.jpg

I parked not too far from the bikes, used the facilities, and on my way out a nice gentleman said, "I bet you are wondering WHY we are here!" Not wanting to be rude, and generally interested I nodded affirmative. A few more guys came over and he said, "We are all Viet Nam vets... And the Memorial Wall is headed to Fort Smith... The Wall has been escorted across country, the Oklahoma contingent is escorting it now... they'll be here in about 30 minutes, and we'll join them and escort the Wall the rest of the way." I gently asked if he (they) minded if I hung around to see it, and join them, figuring it was a once in a lifetime event for me, and wanting to show that I/We (the grand "WE") cared.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/uduhagyp.jpg

Unexpectedly, someone called all of the riders over for a meeting, urging caution, advising the size of the contingent not to break traffic laws, and most of all to be careful... Both on the freeway for the remaining miles, and most of all through town, as they would clearly not ALL "make the lights" in unison through town... then the leader did something unexpected, he asked each man to bow his head... And he led them in prayer.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/aneqepet.jpg

75 to 100 feet away I watched every head bow in silence at once, and they prayed for the loss of life so many years before, and yet so current in each of their lives. I had the camera in my hand and started to take a picture (my family owned a small photography company when I was younger and taking GOOD photos comes naturally--after so many years of practice) But as I raised the camera to my face, something was wrong, the viewfinder was all blurry, the guys were out of focus--much like the keyboard and screen i am looking at now are all blurry.

Tears were streaming down my face then, as they are now writing about it.

I didn't have the courage to intrude upon them then-- I wish I had, and I wish that I had said the two words that are said the least, and the two words that we need to say more often, especially to the members of our armed forces, "THANK YOU!"

After I gained my composure I did take just one picture of the group, and looking at it now, many hands are raised to their faces, just as mine were to mine.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/uze2a9a7.jpg

The WALL arrived, I shot a few photos of it, some of the bikes, and then I escorted the group, riding out slow and last-- with my emergency flashers on, slowing cars coming up from behind, and watching the miles of riders escort the Memorial Wall to Fort Smith.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/03/bare6u7u.jpg

I share this event and photos only as a means of saying thank you to each member of of our armed forces.

Photos will be attached as soon as someone can tell me HOW to attach more than one at a time.

Ok, to continue the trip... I left Tulsa where Rocky saved me from driving on 12 year old tires... and had installed new KYB back strut/shocks (i get them confused)... and drove to OKcity where my Dad guilted me into stopping for dinner (i loved to do it, was just anxious to get on/stay on the road... He wanted me to stay in OKC for the night.. but as My Son Berk and I had just been there the weekend before, i ate and hit the road. We had BBQ which was great, and I figured the protein should help keep my going late into the night.

Didn't get to see the 7 Cadillacs stuck into the ground... Ad or anything near OKC on Route 66... So I just kept driving.

Cruised through the night till about 12 am...

Though the top of Texas near Amarillo, my car had gently began pulling right, slight at first but much more pronounced as the hour went by.

I been humming along at a safe but very fast pace.... And had that feeling, figuring I had better slow down...as my new ride really likes the higher speeds--but the pulling issue concerned me, and since i had been cruising, I began letting off as the concern grew. I came over a ridge and BAM there he was, "Walker Texas Range" in the center island, big as life, he quickly joined traffic headed my direction and made no qualms about WHO he was after.

Lit up, (btw-the new LEDs are BRIGHT at midnight under the black skys of Texas) I slowed to the side of the road, parked a safe distance 3/4 off the road, and quickly lowered all of my limo mirrored glass (as I know it is too dark and mirrored for most states)... 50 plus mph gale force winds, left to right, rocked the quiet cabin, Scared the heck out of me, but also explained the car pulling to the right!! I kept my hands on the wheel and didn't move as he approached.

"Son, do you know how fast you were travl'n 'bout a mile back ?"

"No sir' I do not" I replied neutrally....

"Well Dang SON, why not?"

"We'll sir, I was going so fast I figured I shouldn't really be taken my eyes of the road!"

"That got a little snort of a laugh... He backed up a little and said, you sure got yourself a nice car here... When did you get it?"

Knowing this was the test (he'd seen the dealer temp plates when he lit me up), I responded, "just bought her in TENN three weeks ago, been making weekend treks to bring the car back to CA. Left my Dads house in OKC about 8pm after supper (I added an hours time to keep the pace legal)."

"Lisc and reg if you have it" I gave him my insurance, and CDL...

He walked back to the truck of my car, and came right back... "BTW where did you buy the car?"

And I responded, "Sir it is a long weird name... Something like CHRYSLER, DODGE, RAM, JEEP FiAT of Franklin... "

"Yup... Back in a second"

He came back in few, " Son, one thing.... People usually get arrested when they are closer to double the speed limit, that to the speed limit... And while this is a very nice car, one of my personal favorites... I am going to have to give you a WARNING... Now what this means is that I have listed you, and your car... And if you so much as travel 1mph over the limit through the state of Texas... We will give you BOTH ticket, the real one... And the ticket for the one mile per hour over... And that SON would ruin your night/morn'en for sure... I wrote the warning for 83. take car of this car and have a safe night."

I will post the warning pic...

Made it to TUCUMCARI... Cruised Route 66 for about 30 minuted, and came back to 40 to the Hamster inn... Woke, washed the car, and started ROUTE 66...

Famous places all, all shown in the Pixar hit CARS...

34389

34390

The last, headed out of TUCUMCARI... The ART statue denoting Route 66...

And yes BTW I tried like hell to get my car pointed the other direction... But was already topped on the old highway.... Standing in the middle lane as cars whizzed by... Head on wouldn't have worked...

The last, headed out of TUCUMCARI... The ART statue denoting Route 66...

And yes BTW I tried like hell to get my car pointed the other direction... But was already topped on the old highway.... Standing in the middle lane as cars whizzed by... Head on wouldn't have worked...
