View Full Version : 3.27 gears! Think I'm gonna do it.

My drive is long and about to be longer, and with a cruising speed of 80-90 I can watch my gas gauge drop. Have 4.10s now and instead of going back with 355 I'm thinking the ever popular 3.27, gotta get my gas mileage up!

Why not just get a bigger real tire. Will be equivalent to change gears without the hassle or sacrificing performance!?

2,050 RPM's at 80 with 4.30's! I love it. Switching to a Yukon 4.11 now for a little more girth on the pinion. Probably gonna be 1,850 now..

Yes Bob that is freakin awesome! I plan on doing the swap to either a 5 or 6 speed depending on what my tax return looks like next year. 6 months she'll be paid off! Right now though I'm coughing out major bucks in gas and think I'm going to do this as a short term thing. I got my 4.10s from a buddy in my shop installed for $100, **** if he's got 3.08s I may do that. I know this is blasphemy but I gotta save some $$$ on my daily road trips. Buying a small gas saver is not an option....yuck.

327 should work good for highway mpg and at 80 you can grab 2nd and take it over 100. Might even be faster at higher speeds each gear will run out farther. Cv sports come with that ratio

No. Not for me.
Will be interesting to see what MPG I get with the gears, I bested a 20 today if my math was right :)
If I can jump that to 30, and not get another car payment and not insure another car, mo money mo money in my pocket and maybe in a year or so go back to 410 when the manual swap is done...that's the plan.

That is no doubt!
And I know the performance I love will go down the toilet but if I can squeeze some more MPGs out of her then it will help my wallet until I get over a small hump. She'll be paid off in 6 months, and hopefully by then DHS will be sucking some child support money out of my exwife so I'll have more breathing room. I'm in a position where I can do a gear swap for a bit less than most pay so I'm going to take advantage of it and see how it works. If for some reason she won't pull herself up the hill and MPG is below say 25 then I'll say bad investment and throw the 410s back in I suppose...
Also I'm saving for a ring, and no I guess I didn't learn the first time around. Sorry y'all I know this isn't Facebook so sorry about the drama but just letting you know why I'm trying to save a few bucks. it is a 4400lb car but I love it and want to drive it everyday so this may be a way I can keep doing that:)

How much mpg could you pick up with this ?
I ask because I want to get the 4.10's for this spring. In most of the stuff I've found, guys are saying that you don't lose much going to the 4.10's, maybe 1 - 2 mpg. I don't put a lot of miles on this car, so it's not a deal-breaker for me.
So, if you go back to the 3.55's, you'd get that same 1 or 2 mpg back, and maybe grab 1 more mpg to the 3.27 - so figure about 3 mpg total ?

Only if you keep the car under 75. Past 2500 rpm the gas goes fast. With 3.73 @ 80 my tach spins at 2500rpm. You CAN get decent mileage with 4.10's just not at 80 or above.
Higher stall toque converter is another good option too for off the line performance.

Actually a v6 with your gears will probably be more responsive and as good on gas than switching your rear end.
Just get a 4cyl junker for work. An sc series Saturn with a manual will get 35mpg for a $1500 car. Your putting how much dough into gears you will not be happy with?

Everything I read said 4.10s lose 1 to 2 mpg
OEM with CAI & Lidio tune I got 21/22
4.10s I lost 1.5mpg - right in line with what everyone said
Then I installed Trilogy & went up to 24 (which to my surprise everyone with a blower said was common)

By that math, reinstall the OEM gears, get blown & make your desired mpg! :D

Drop weight, easiest way to increase gas mileage. Also bring your speed down to 60-70 mph and in wont drink the gas as much.
I did a test with my car for a few weeks, the highway part of my daily 60 mi round trip is 40 miles. I did 80 mph during the 40 miles and then the next week I did 70 mph. I saw about a 2.3 mpg increase when I went 10 mph slower.
I've got a 3500 stall converter, 4.10 gears and with 265/50-18 rear tires (effective 4.15 rear gear).

Yeah, I don't like the high stall and low gears. Sure, they'll give those couple tenths at the dragstrip. But they're annoying to drive, and once the car is rolling it is all about the motor. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. I think 3.55:1 is perfect, as is the stock converter. Only thing they did wrong was not supercharge it from the factory.

Usually when I fill my MM up it takes around 17 gal.
So if you were to get an extra 2mpg it would be around 34 additional miles per tank.
Lets stay you knock down 22mpg with the 4.10's (going off my own personal actual data around 85-90mph), and jump to 24mpg with 3.27's.
On a 12,000 miles a year would spend $2127 a year based on a $3.90 a gallon with 4.10's
On a 12,000 miles a year would spend $1950 a year based on a $3.90 a gallon with 3.27's
So a 2 mpg improvement would only yield around $177 dollars a year in savings, and you would make your MM a lethargic feeling grandpa car. You would need to keep it this way for 3 years to come $31 on top of spending $500 for swapping the gears again.
Its really easy math to do.

You could always do an under-drive pulley. It will reduce parasitic drag on the engine and improve performance at the same time.
Even figure 4mpg in the math. Its pretty easy. Plus at higher speeds and lower RPM you will have an increased load on the engine. Just because its lower RPM doesn't mean its more efficient.
This is why I chuckle when people spend 40k on a new car because it gets 2-4mpg better than the old one and thinks it will save them thousands in a short period of time. It doesn't....

3.27 ratio to save gas in a Marauder? Waste of time and money. Since you are running 4.10s you must have a tune so you may as well put back the 3.55s and put the stock tune back in which was geared towards gas mileage in the first place. Then the car will still have some sort of performance in it.
3.27s will just make the car a dog and result in you pushing the pedal down more and wasting even more gas which will just defeat the initial purpose.

2500+ for a 2-4mpg gain? You'll need to drive the car for 12-15 years to break even. Remember low RPM isn't the key. If your engine is bogged and high in load it will burn just as much fuel. Which is why 4.10 guys usually see IMPROVEMENT in city mpg. If you are really this concerned put the 3.55's back in it and change the axle ratio in the tune and call it a day. You want a tune, the increased timing helps mpg. Purchase things that reduce parasitic loss and increase engine efficiency. Stuff as simple as making sure tires are at the propper PSI will net you 1-4 depending on how low they are.

You want a tune, the increased timing helps mpg. Purchase things that reduce parasitic loss and increase engine efficiency. Stuff as simple as making sure tires are at the propper PSI will net you 1-4 depending on how low they are.
I'm seeing this now. I do have a tune and getting 18 or so average. Tho I would not have NEAR 2500 in doing the swap I do see the point. A year ago my heavy line tech had a used set of 4.10s in his box, I said"bet you $100 my car won't have 4.10s by the end of the day"
I lost that bet;) later I ordered a tune from mo.
Even if the 3.27s were installed for free I'm thinking the gains if any would not be worthwhile compared to the losses. I drive mostly on the hwy but oh well. Just need to save up for a manual...
Thanks again, sometimes we think outloud on this forum and I appreciate all the very good input.
